Gerhoh (Eichstatt)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Gerhoh († February 2, 806 ?) Was Bishop of Eichstätt from 787 (?) To 806 (?).

Gerhoh came from a leading class of the Frankish Empire and was probably related to Gerold II , the brother-in-law of Charlemagne . His predecessor, Willibald von Eichstätt , had probably taken care of his appointment as bishop ; Gerhoh was his baptized child. Willibald died on July 7th, probably in 787. Soon afterwards, Gerhoh, as Bishop of Eichstätt, converted the Benedictine monastery Heidenheim into a canon monastery, whereby the secular canons received only part of the goods, while he received the other part in favor of the diocese via one Meierhof farmed. The Herrieden Monastery was founded at this time. In 793, Charlemagne, who was staying at the Fossa Carolina , which was under construction, enfeoffed him with the imperial abbey of St. Leodegar in Murbach in Alsace and appointed him as Abbot Bishop . 794 Gerhoh took part in the Imperial Synod in Frankfurt, on the Bavarian Duke Tassilo III. was forced to abdicate; thus the diocese of Eichstätt finally came to the Franconian Empire. With the dissolution of the Diocese of Neuburg an der Donau in 798 and the redefinition of the diocese borders, Gerhoh was able to incorporate the Sualafeldgau north of the Danube into his diocese.

Gerhoh probably built the first Eichstätt cathedral , while the Willibaldine monastery had its own sacred space within its walls.

According to medieval sources, Gerhoh bequeathed his private property to the bishop's church at the end of his life, including valuable objects such as a golden portable altar that has not been preserved. The year of death has only been handed down indirectly; In 805 he is mentioned in a document from the Murbach monastery.
