Burchard (Eichstatt)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Burchard († around 1153 ) was Bishop of Eichstätt from 1149 to 1153.

origin

Burchard came from a noble family, conceivable would be the von Mässing or von Wachenzell families (see also the list of Bavarian noble families ). His father was Hartnid the elder, his brothers Hartnid the younger, Regenhard and Uto.

Life

As early as 1119, Burchard appeared as Eichstätter canon and held the post of provost with interruptions. After the death of his predecessor Gebhard II von Grögling, he was elected bishop in a schismatic election by the majority of the cathedral chapter. A smaller Staufer-friendly party opted for the Provost Walbrun . Conrad III. , having returned from his crusade , chose Burchard's favor.

Burchard and several abbots, including Markward von Fulda and Adam von Ebrach , agreed with a complaint by Count Rapoto von Abenberg , according to which his father had built the Abenberg monastery without his consent and Rapoto achieved a reallocation of the goods to the Heilsbronn monastery .

Pope Eugene III. commissioned Abbot Adam von Ebrach and Bamberg Bishop Eberhard II von Otelingen with the expulsion of the canons brought back to Heidenheim Monastery by the Eichstatt Bishop and the Mainz Bishop Heinrich I. Felix von Harburg . These came from regional aristocratic families and fought bitterly against it. In 1151 Eberhard II reported in Nuremberg about the renunciation of the canons. Eugene III. now determined the bishops, the Eichstätter Hochstiftsvogt Gerhard von Grögling and the monastery bailiff Adelbert von Truhendingen to support the abbot Adelbert in Heidenheim, who was deputy of the Michelfeld monastery , in the restoration of spiritual life. Burchard opposed this order because of the interventions of the Bamberg bishop in his sphere of influence, Abbot Adelbert gave up and returned to Michelfeld. The conflict had caused a national sensation: in 1153 the Pope sent the cardinal legates Bernhard and Gregor to reinstate the abbot. With the consent of Friedrich Barbarossa, the legates finally succeeded in removing Burchard, who is said to have died that same year.
