The Evangelical Lutheran parish church is a listed building within the castle and palace complex in Sommersdorf . She belongs to the dean's office in Ansbach .

Parish

In 1432 the first chapel was built in Sommersdorf. It was originally a branch of St. Laurentius (Großenried) . The respective owners of the manor held the patronage. The chapel was dedicated to the Virgin Mary , St. Barbara , St. Stephen and St. Consecrated to Sebastian . After the Reformation was introduced in 1551, Sommersdorf was raised to a parish in 1557. From 1565 to 1586 the parish was connected with St. Peter (Thann) , since 1632 permanently until today. In 1964 the patronage of the Lords of Crailsheim ended.

The parish around 1800 included the places Dierersdorf , Gerersdorf , the shepherd's house of Irrebach , Niederoberbach , Reisach and Weiherschneidbach . Neuses was re-pastured from St. Bartholomäus (Brodswinden) to Sommersdorf in 1812 .

Weiherschneidbach has been parish in the Markgrafenkirche (Weidenbach) since 1861 at the latest . The inhabitants of the Evangelical Lutheran denomination of the originally purely Catholic towns of Aub , Großenried , Kleinried and Mörlach were added to the parish. In 1995, Burgoberbach was parried from St. Bartholomäus (Brodswinden) to Sommersdorf. Currently (as of 2017) the parish has 1,330 members.

Church building

The original chapel was demolished in 1468 and rebuilt further to the west, at its current location by the castle. The nave and the tower adjoining it in the southeast are made of quarry stone. The tower is round in the basement, the two upper floors were rebuilt in 1722 and are octagonal and plastered. The bell storey has half-timbering. A bell dome sits on top of it.

The tithe barn adjoining to the west , which was built in the second half of the 15th century, was converted into today's parish church in 1923. In the west a rectangular apse with a hipped roof was added, in the south a sacristy in the diaphragm. All buildings are made of quarry stone. There are two arched windows on the south side and three arched windows on the north side. There is a round arch portal on the east side. The nave ends with a gable roof.

The single-aisled hall closes off inside with a wood-paneled barrel vault. A gallery has moved in on the east side. The organ of the former parish church stands on it. It dates from the second half of the 18th century. It has a five-part case with curved beams and carved acanthus panels and an old musical mechanism. The Altarmensa stands on the west wall, to the south of it a simple octagonal pulpit made of wood, to the north of it an octagonal baptismal font. Three epitaphs from the Crailsheim family from the 17th century are immured in the church.
