The Biakliest ( Tanysiptera riedelii ) is an endemic species of kingfishers , the main area of ​​which is the island of Biak , which belongs to Indonesia , north of western New Guinea . The species is closely related to the Spatelliest .

features

The Biakliest, including the extended control springs, has a body length of 37 centimeters. It has a large red beak. The brilliantly shiny turquoise-blue head cap extends over the crown of the head, the sides of the head and the neck. It has white plumage on the chest and blue wings. There are also shiny turquoise spots on the shoulders. It has two very long tail feathers, as is typical for a Kingfisher of Paradise . The basal half of the control springs are each white.

Occurrence and habitat

The Biakliest is common on the island of Biak . The species is also found on the adjacent island of Supiori . This island, which belongs to the Schouten Islands, is located in the Cenderawasih Bay west of Biak and is separated from it in the east by a narrow strait, the so-called Teluk Surendidori, only a few meters wide. It colonizes different types of forest and can also be seen more often at the forest edges.

The biakliest feeds on insects and worms, which it catches on the ground.
