Jules Verreaux

Jules Pierre Verreaux (born August 24, 1807 in Paris , † September 7, 1873 in Paris in the 3rd arrondissement ) was a French plant collector and ornithologist .

Live and act

In 1803, Pierre-Jacques Verreaux's father opened the first natural produce store on Place de Vosges in Paris, a store that would later become known as Maison Verreaux . The father married Joséphine Delalande, who was a sister of Pierre Antoine Delalande (1787-1823), who was serving as taxidermist for Étienne Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire (1772-1844) at the Muséum national d'histoire naturelle at the time. When Delalande was sent on a three-year expedition to South Africa on behalf of the Paris Museum in 1818 , the only twelve-year-old Jules was allowed to accompany him into the distance. This experience was considered the initial spark for his interest in natural history. They brought more than 130,000 collected natural produce with them from the trip. The majority of the specimens consisted of plants, but also included nearly 300 mammals, 2,000 bird hides, and more than 4,000 clams.

After returning from South Africa, he studied under the guidance of Georges Cuvier (1769-1832) at the Paris Museum. After the death of his mentor Delalande, he returned to Kapland again in 1825 . From 1829 to 1838 he served as a curator in Cape Town at the Museum of the South African Literary and Scientific Institution of Andrew Smith (1797–1872). The museum's collection consists of the collections of Baron Carl von Ludwig (1784–1847), Andrew Smith, the Verreauxs and the institute, which belonged to the state. The Verreaux collection was always privately owned and was only available to the museum on loan. First he bought large collections of animals in South Africa for his father and finally asked his younger brother Édouard Verreaux (1810–1868) in 1830 to come to Cape Town to safely transport the specimens to Paris. Driven by the business success, Édouard returned to South Africa together with his brother Joseph Alexis Verreaux (? -1868) in 1832. In 1833, Édouard began a solo journey from South Africa to Southeast Asia, which took him via Sumatra , Java , the Philippines and Cochinchina to China . Jules and Alexis stayed behind in South Africa. While Jules made his living as a taxidermist and showman of zoological curiosities, Alexis, who lived in South Africa until his death, made his daily bread with a gunpowder shop. Jules acquired the bird collection that the officer and naturalist Victor Sganzins (1799–1841) had collected from 1831 to 1832 on the east coast of Madagascar . When he returned to Paris in 1838, he lost his entire collection. The ship Lucullus with the valuable cargo crashed into the rocks and capsized off La Rochelle on the east coast of France. Verreaux swam ashore, but his priceless collection was lost forever.

In 1842 he began his third and last voyage abroad on behalf of the Paris Museum. So he collected in Australia and Tasmania for five years . From the expedition he brought home around 11,500 natural history collectibles.

Subsequently, in Paris, together with Édouard, he devoted himself to the technical management of the Maison Verreaux , which was meanwhile at Place Royale 9 in Paris. As a connoisseur of exotic birds, Jules in particular earned an excellent reputation among the experts. The house now had such a good reputation that the company was able to secure numerous yields from successful travelers. Jules edited the exhibits himself and it was said that he had helped Charles Lucien Jules Laurent Bonaparte (1803-1857) in writing the second volume of his Conspectus generum avium . In 1864 he was the successor to Florent Prévost (1794-1870) scientific assistant (aide-naturaliste) of the museum. As an employee of Alphonse Milne-Edwards (1835–1900), he took care of the novelties that the Lazarist Father Armand David (1826–1900) had been sending to the museum from west and central China since 1862. The museum later received other specimens from Tibet , which Verreaux described under titles such as Notes sur quelques oiseaux considérés comme nouveaux: provenant du voyage de l'Abbé Armand David dans le Thibet oriental in the museum magazine Nouvelles archives du Muséum d'histoire naturelle .

When the German troops approached Paris in the Franco-Prussian War in 1870 , Verreaux fled to London. Here he met the young Richard Bowdler Sharpe (1847–1909), who wrote about him:

"He possessed an immense knowledge of birds, probably greater than any man of his generation."

After his death, Émile Oustalet (1844–1905) took over his post at the museum, who together with Father Armand finally completed Verreaux's work with the book Les oiseaux de la Chine .

Verreaux achieved dubious fame through the skinning and stuffing of the black African "El Negro" who died in 1831 and was presented at the 1888 World Exhibition in Barcelona .

The scientist Jules Verreaux

Both Jules and Édouard did not limit their activities to the natural produce trade. In 1832 they published a book on the geography and history of Australia. Together with Marc Athanase Parfait Œillet Des Murs (1804-1894) he wrote about the birds of New Caledonia . In general, he had a very friendly relationship with Œillet Des Murs. First he introduced Œillet Des Murs to the Société cuviérienne in 1840, and in 1842 the latter wrote an article about Verreaux with the title Voyage de M. Jules Verreaux à la Nouvelle-Hollande , in which he outlined Verreaux's career to date in South Africa and his government mandate for a trip to Australia. It was also Œillet Des Murs who wrote an obituary for Jules Verreaux in the Bulletin de la Société nationale d'acclimatation de France . In his publications he worked alongside his brother Édouard and Œillet Des Murs, a. a. with Étienne Mulsant (1797–1880) and Paul Gervais (1816–1879). In addition, he edited numerous works such as Jean-Charles Chenus (1808–1879) Leçons élémentaires sur l'histoire naturelle des oiseaux . Baron Frédéric de Lafresnaye (1783–1861) also took up 1847 in his articles Observation sur les mœurs d'un grand nombre d'espèces d'oiseaux d'Australie et de la Tasmanie, faites par MJ Verreaux pendant un séjour de cinq années dans ces contrées, et suvies de quelques réflextion scientifique and Observation sur les mœurs d'un grand nombre d'oiseaux; par MJ Verreaux; suivies de quelques réflexions in the French journal Revue zoologique on Verreaux's expertise and descriptions. His last publication appeared posthumously because Alphonse Milne-Edwards discovered the manuscript very late in Verreaux's files.

Despite the good reputation of Maison Verreaux , the brothers did not seem the best address, at least when it came to oology . Thomas Powys, 4th Baron Lilford (1833-1896) complained that he had purchased eggs and bird skins from the brothers and that they were deficient and incorrectly labeled. Essential scientific data such as the time and place of the discovery were often missing. This fact is all the more astonishing since Verreaux provided a French translation of Alfred Newton's (1829–1907) Suggestions for forming Collections of Birds' Eggs in Revue et magasin de zoologie pure et appliquée in 1862 .

After Lafresnaye's death, his collection was for sale. The catalog for the auction of the ornithological collection was compiled by Jules Verreaux, who went to the castle in Falaise for a full 3 months for his work . The catalog and the collection went to Henry Bryant (1820–1867), who had acquired the collection for the Boston Society of Natural History , before the auction began .

René Primevère Lesson (1794–1849) described the coffee eagle ( Aquila verreauxii ) for the first time in 1831 . In his description it said:

"L'oiseaux que M. Verreaux, voyageur naturaliste qui explore en ce moment l'extrémité australe d'Afrique, vient d'adresser à son père à Paris, est sans contredit un des aigles les plus remarquables par la coloration franche du plumage. “The bird that the traveling naturalist Mr. Verreaux, who is currently exploring the southern tip of Arika, sent to his father in Paris is undoubtedly a very remarkable eagle with a pure color of the plumage. The Verreaux eagle is part of the collection of Mr. Audenet (1800–1872), a recognized amateur orithologist from Paris. "

The globetrotter and naturalist Alfred Grandidier (1836–1921) paid him recognition in 1867 with the scientific names for the larval sifaka ( Propithecus verreauxi ) and the broad-headed silky cuckoo ( Coua verreauxi ). So he wrote in a letter published in Revue et magasin de zoologie pure et appliquée :

Later when describing the birds it was said:

In 1854 Charles Lucien Jules Laurent Bonaparte honored him in the name of the yellow-breasted tinamu ( Nothocercus julius ).

The English zoologist Richard Bowdler Sharpe (1847–1909) called the golden-forehead parrot ( Paradoxornis verreauxi ) in 1883 , a bird that was described by Verreaux in 1870 under the name Suthora gularis . Sharpe suggested this name because Suthora gularis was used as early as 1845 by George Robert Gray (1808–1872) for the gray-headed parrot's bill ( Paradoxornis gularis ) and this represented a name conflict according to the International Rules for Zoological Nomenclature . J. de la Berge named Alcedo Verreauxii after him in 1851 , which is now listed as a subspecies of the meninting kingfisher ( Alcedo meninting verreauxi ).

Daniel Giraud Elliot (1835–1915) described in 1870 a subspecies of the crested guinea fowl that is now known as Guttera pucherani verreauxi . Even when Édouard had finished the copy, he dedicated the name to his good friend Jules Verreaux.

With Conger verreauxi , Johann Jakob Kaup (1803–1873) dedicated the binomial of a fish species belonging to the conger eel family to him in 1856 . He justified this as follows:

"Named after my dear friend Julius Verreaux, who collected it in Australia"

In the epithet of a Gekko , his name will again. This is how Robert Christopher Tytler (1818–1872) called a Gekkoart Gekko verreauxi in 1865 . To justify the name he wrote:

"I have named it after my esteemed friend M. Jules Verreaux of Paris, the great and well known naturalist."

Since Jules Verreaux worked as a curator at the South African Literary and Scientific Institution between 1829 and 1838 and was therefore in close contact with Andrew Smith, the Verreaux mouse Myomyscus verreauxii was also dedicated in his honor . Smith described it in the South African quarterly journal in 1834 under the name Mus Verroxii (Verreaux's Mouse).

For the brothers

The blue-ringed dove ( Leptotila verreauxi ), which Charles Lucien Jules Laurent Bonaparte (1803-1857) described in 1857, is not exclusively dedicated to Jules, but probably also to his brother Édouard. So wrote Bonaparte:

“A magnifique example of adults a été procuré par MM. Verreaux au Muséum, qui possède l'espèce tous ses états d'âge et de sexe…. en magasin. »

A subspecies of the yellow-flanked woodpecker ( Celeus grammicus verreauxii ), which Alfred Malherbe (1804-1865) described under the name Celeopicus Verrauxii , is also dedicated to the brothers. Malherbe used the reason for the name:

Hermann Schlegel (1804-1884) showed in an analysis of the Musophaga Persa (today Guinea- Turaco Tauraco persa ) in 1854 that today's subspecies of the blue-backed turaco Tauraco macrorhynchus verreauxii , which the Verreaux brothers had classified as Guinea-Turaco, differs significantly. So he wrote in his analysis:

“The Verreaux brothers later showed that this view was wrong. The species listed by Mr. Verreaux as Persa is quite different from the true Persa; it is obviously new and may therefore be called M. Verreauxii. "

Memberships

On June 17, 1829, various gentlemen met in the Cape Town public library to found the South African Institution. Verreaux is one of the founding members.

In 1839 he was introduced by Alexandre Ricord (1798–1876) as member number 156 of the Société cuviérienne . For the introduction it says:

“156. M. Jules Verreaux, naturalist voyageur, presented by M. Ricord ”

For the society he recruited other members, and in 1840 he presented the society with member 199 the lawyer Œillet Des Murs. and in 1843 with member 286 F. Bureau from Paris.

As early as 1853 he was proposed by Heinrich Gottlieb Ludwig Reichenbach (1793–1879) together with his brother as an honorary member of the German Ornithological Society and was finally elected. In 1866 the British Ornithologists' Union made him an honorary member.

After the death of Charles Lucien Jules Laurent Bonaparte, he was a member of a commission of scholars who wanted to mint a commemorative coin in gold, silver and bronze to order in honor of the deceased.
