Florent Prévost

Guillaume Florent Prévost (born August 17, 1794 in Paris , † February 1, 1870 in the 5th arrondissement ) was a French ornithologist and scientific assistant at the Muséum national d'histoire naturelle (MNHN) in Paris.

Live and act

Prévost was a student of Isidore Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire (1805–1861), for whom he also worked at the MNHN as a scientific assistant (aide-naturaliste). Here he first worked as a taxidermist in Rue Ste Hyacinthe 7. For Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire , he looked after the living amphibians (snakes and lizards). He observed that one smooth snakes ( Coronella austriaca ) Laurenti , 1768 and grass snakes ( Natrix natrix ) Linnaeus , can bring by the withdrawal of water in 1758 to live to give birth. But even Karl Ernst von Baer (1792–1876) questioned these observations and rightly stated that smooth snakes belong to the group of viviparous snakes anyway.

In 1832 he succeeded Charles Robert Alexandre des Moulins (1798–1875) as Chef du Laboratoire du Museum d'Histoire Naturelle and managed the bird department until his death in 1870. As a humble and hard-working science pioneer, he lived there for half a century on a meager wage of just 2500 francs a year.

After Antoinette Paulette Jacqueline Knip , b. Rifer de Courcelles (1781–1851), a work by Anselme Gaëtan Desmarest (1784–1838) on exotic birds, Histoire naturelle des tangares, des manakins et des todiers , had illustrated, she shifted her focus to painting pigeons. She asked Coenraad Jacob Temminck (1778–1858) to write the text, and it was ultimately successful. In 1808 the first delivery of the work appeared, which was printed under the title Histoire naturelle générale des Pigeons par CJ Temminck . When Temminck returned to Paris in 1811, he noticed that Mrs. Knip had betrayed him since 1808 and had published all further deliveries exclusively under her name and the short title Les pigeons . In disagreement they parted and the pigeon work initially remained a fragment. It was not until many years later that Ms. Knip was reconciled with Temminck and he even allowed her to depict some of the pigeon species newly discovered by the members of the Natural History Commission. In the period from 1838 to 1843, she published a second volume with another 60 pigeon tables, for which Prévost wrote the text. The volume consisted of 15 deliveries at a price of 25 francs.

In 1837 the first and in 1845 the second edition of Charles Louis Lemaire's Histoire naturelle des oiseaux d'Europe came on the market. Although there was no discernible difference between the two editions, Prévost's name suddenly appeared on the title of the book from the second edition. The Histoire naturelle des oiseaux exotiques from 1836 also initially appeared without Prévost's name.

When Joseph Fortuné Théodore Eydoux (1802–1841) and Louis François Auguste Souleyet (1811–1852) began to describe the zoological yields of the Corvette La Bonite between 1836 and 1837, it was Prévost who, together with Jean-Joseph Zéphirin Gerbe (1810– 1890) edited the chapter on birds. As head of the zoological department, he also provided material from the museum that came from the trip from India and China under the command of Cyrille Pierre Théodore Laplace (1793–1875). Further bellows came from the collection of François Victor Masséna , the second Duke of Rivoli and third Prince of Essling (1799–1863), and were made available by his private curator Louis Kiener . Eydoux published the result in the work Voyage autor du monde par les mers de l'Inde et de Chine exécuté sur le corvette de l'état La Favorite pendant les années 1830, 1831 et 1832 sous la commandement de M. Laplace .

Together with Marc Athanase Parfait Œillet Des Murs (1804–1894), Prévost worked on the birds in Voyage en Abyssinie , a work in which the yield of Charlemagne Théophile Lefebvre (1811–1860), Antoine Petit , Léon Richard Quartin-Dillon (–1840 ) and Vignaud during their journey in the Abyssinian Empire in 1839 and 1842. The other zoological chapters were edited by Antoine Alphonse Guichenot (1809–1876) and Félix Édouard Guérin-Méneville (1799–1874). In the volume on zoology of the work Voyage autour du monde sur la frégate la Vénus , he worked with Des Murs on the bird yield from a circumnavigation of Abel Aubert Dupetit-Thouars (1793–1864). With Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire and Jacques Pucheran (1817–1895) he published a catalog in 1851 that was supposed to document the mammals and birds in the museum. However, the only volume consisted only of mammals, so that its contribution to the work should be small.

Prévost later shifted his research focus to the short- or long-term adaptation of strange animals and birds to the climatic living conditions in Paris. In various articles he wrote about the acclimatization of kangaroos , Virginia quails and the great emus .

Studies on the nutrition of birds followed ( Du régime alimentaire des oiseaux ). With the help of this knowledge, he gradually worked out the connections between insects as a source of food for birds ( De la destruction du Hanneton et de son emploi pour la nourriture des jeunes oiseaux ) and their importance for agriculture ( Notice sur les travaux d'histoire naturelle et particulièrement de zoologie appliquée à l'économie agricole ). He highlighted the role of the birds of prey ( De la conservation des oiseaux de proie nocturnes dans l'intérêt de l'agriculture ) as well as the role of the swallows ( Un mot en faveur de l'utilité des hirondelles ). These publications also earned him international recognition. So wrote LEONARD LANDOIS (1837-1902):

“This providential task of the bird could for a long time be considered a poetic exaggeration; Today, thanks to the work of more recent naturalists, and in particular to Mr. Florent Prévost, a naturalist assistant at our natural history museum, it has taken its place among the most proven truths in science. "

During the world exhibition in London in 1862 , Prévost exhibited a considerable collection of bird stomachs including their contents.

There are often indications in the literature that Prévost also worked as an animal illustrator and worked on the Iconographie ornithologique by Marc Athanase Parfait Œillet Des Murs (1804-1894). However, the hand-colored lithographs come from Lucien Alphonse Prévost (1799–1846) and Paul Louis Oudart (1796–1860), without Florent Prévost having contributed anything. The animal illustrator was Prèvost's younger brother.

Honors

In 1857 he was awarded the first class medal of the Société impériale zoologique d'acclimatation (today: Société nationale de protection de la nature ) for the acclimatization of Asiatic donkeys , llamas and especially the cassowaries . Just two years later, the company withdrew the medal from him because he had not looked after a herd of yaks and did not even regret their loss.

The Société impériale et centrale d'agriculture (today: Académie d'agriculture de France ) awarded him in 1858 the gold medal with the portrait of Olivier de Serres (1539-1619) .

Dedication names

René Primevère Lesson (1794–1849) dedicated the specific epithet of the green-breasted mango ( Anthracothorax prevostii ) to him in 1832 . In his dedication he wrote:

Another species that Lesson gave its name to is the Helmvanga ( Euryceros prevostii ) Lesson , 1831. Prévost got the type specimen from a collection in Madagascar.

Amblycercus prevostrii is now a synonym for a subspecies of the yellow-billed cassike ( Amblycercus holosericeus australis ).

In the first description of the cat-eye water snake ( Gerarda prevostiana ), Joseph Fortuné Théodore Eydoux (1802–1841) and François-Louis-Paul Gervais (1816–1879) paid their respects to their friend. They mentioned that he had made many interesting observations during the birth of snakes.
