Louis François Auguste Souleyet

Louis François Auguste Souleyet (born January 8, 1811 in Besse-sur-Issole , Département Var , † October 7, 1852 in Martinique ) was a French malacologist and ship's doctor.

Life

He was a doctor and naturalist from June 1836 to October 1837 during the circumnavigation of Auguste Nicolas Vaillant (1793-1858) on the ship La Bonité and worked with Joseph Fortuné Théodore Eydoux (1802-1841) on the zoological part of the final report. The botanists Charles Gaudichaud-Beaupré and Benôit-Henri Darondeau were also on board the 21-month voyage . In particular, Gaudichaud, who already had experience from an earlier world tour, taught Souleyet on the trip in natural history, in particular about mollusks. It was mainly collected in the Pacific. They drove via Rio Janeiro around Cape Horn to Valparaíso in Chile, then to Peru, Hawaii , where they stayed longer, to the Mariana Islands , the Philippines ( Manila ), Canton , Singapore , India, Réunion and around the Cape of Good Hope and St. Helena back to Brest.

After the trip, he was officially engaged in processing the zoological material for several years, some of which he still had to familiarize himself with. The work was interrupted by various business trips by ship from 1846 to 1849. The specimens of mollusks they had collected were cataloged by John Edward Gray of the British Museum in 1855 and reworked them.

He died of yellow fever in Martinique. In 1852 he was called there as a ship's doctor because an epidemic had broken out in the Antilles.

Dedication names

In his honor, the lancet stick tree climber ( Lepidocolaptes souleyetii ) ( Des Murs , 1849) was named. Edgar Albert Smith described a species of snail from the Atlantidae family in 1888 under the name Protatlanta souleyeti . Achille Valenciennes named a fish La Girelle de Souleyet (Julis souleyetii, nob.) In 1839 , a name that is now considered a synonym for the Christmas Junker ( Thalassoma trilobatum ) ( Lacepède , 1801). A species belonging to the rib fern family, Sadleria souleyetiana ( Gaudich. ) T. Moore, also bears his name. Gaudichaud had re-illustrated the species for science under the name Blechum (Sadleria) Souleyetianum .
