Joseph Fortuné Théodore Eydoux

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Joseph Fortuné Théodore Eydoux (born April 23, 1802 in Toulon , † July 6, 1841 in Saint-Pierre in Martinique ) was a French naturalist ( zoologist ) and surgeon in the French Navy.

Live and act

Eydoux, who became a marine surgeon in 1821, took part with the naturalist and surgeon Louis François Auguste Souleyet , his assistant, in the circumnavigation of the La Favorite under captain Cyrille Pierre Théodore Laplace (1830-1832). He also took part in the circumnavigation of Auguste-Nicolas Vaillant (1793-1858) on La Bonité in 1836/37 (and wrote the zoological part of the final report with Souleyet). In addition to working with Souleyet, he also published with Paul Gervais (who both co-wrote with him after his death). Eydoux died of yellow fever in 1841 in the Saint-Pierre marine hospital in Martinique, where he had been posted. The same fate befell Souleyet 11 years later.

Some initial descriptions of fish, for example, come from Souleyet and Eydoux. The sea snake Aipysurus eydouxii (Gray 1849) is named after him.

Memberships

In 1839 Eydoux was introduced by Félix Édouard Guérin-Méneville as member number 172 of the Société cuviérienne .
