Anselme Gaëtan Desmarest
Anselme Gaëtan Desmarest (born March 6, 1784 in Paris , † June 4, 1838 in Maisons-Alfort ) was a French zoologist and writer .
life and work
He was the son of the famous geologist Nicolas Desmarest (1725-1815) and studied zoology at the Maisons-Alfort State Veterinary School . He was a student of Georges Cuvier and Alexandre Brongniart and in 1815 he became professor of zoology at the École nationale vétérinaire d'Alfort , where he was able to prevail against Pierre André Latreille . In 1820 he was elected to the Académie nationale de médecine . Since 1819 he was an elected member of the American Philosophical Society . In 1825 he was accepted as a corresponding member of the Académie des sciences .
Desmarest published his Histoire Naturelle des Tangaras, des Manakins et des Todiers in 1805 , the Considérations générales sur la classe des crustacés in 1825 , the Mammalogie ou description des espèces des Mammifères in 1820 and the Dictionnaire des Sciences Naturelles from 1816 to 1830 together with André Marie Constant Duméril . During his work as a zoologist, he also described many animal species, including the bucket dog , the black-backed tapir , the red giant kangaroo and the thick-tailed opossum .
He was the father of the zoologist Eugène Desmarest .
