Włodzimierz Wojciech Smolarek (born July 16, 1957 in Aleksandrów Łódzki ; † March 6, 2012 there ) was a Polish football player .

Career

The tricky left winger Smolarek played in Poland with Widzew Łódź and during his army time with Legia Warsaw . With Widzew he won the Polish championship in 1981 and 1982. He played here in a team with the great star of the time Zbigniew Boniek and was nominated for the squad of the Polish national team for the 1982 World Cup in Spain . Smolarek scored two goals after brilliant individual actions in Leipzig against the GDR (Poland won 3-2), which made Poland's appearance in Spain possible. In Spain he was part of the team that came third for the second time after 1974. After Boniek left for Juventus Turin , he was also Widzew's top scorer. In 1985 he won the Polish Cup with Widzew and took part in the 1986 World Cup in Mexico . Here his team lost 4-0 against Brazil in the round of 16 . After the tournament, he moved to the Bundesliga at Eintracht Frankfurt , where the technically strong dribbler quickly became one of the most popular Eintracht players. In 1988 he won the DFB Cup with Frankfurt and went to Feyenoord Rotterdam after that season . After two years at Feyenoord, he moved to FC Utrecht , where he played until he retired in 1996 at the age of 39.

After the end of his career, Smolarek coached the junior team of Feyenoord Rotterdam until 2009, in which he also trained his son Euzebiusz , who later moved to Borussia Dortmund . Most recently he worked as a scout for the Polish Association. Smolarek played a total of 60 international matches for Poland and was team captain in nine games. He was fluent in Dutch .
