The Aymara pigeon ( Metriopelia aymara ) is a species of the pigeon birds and is counted as part of the subfamily of the American small pigeons . Like the spectacle , moreno and cordillera pigeons belonging to the same genus , it is a species that occurs exclusively in the South American highlands.

Appearance

The Aymara pigeon reaches a body length of up to 19 centimeters. It is only half the size of a laughing dove . The physique is compact. The tail is very short and rounded at the end. The sexual dimorphism is only very slight. The females only have a slightly duller plumage.

The plumage of the Aymara pigeon is pale yellow-brown and partially tinged with pink. The throat is white, the stomach is slightly lighter than the top of the body. The under tail-coverts and the wings of the hand are dark. Bronze-colored spots form a row on the small wing covers. The beak is dark gray, the iris is brown.

Distribution and way of life

The Aymara pigeon occurs from central Peru across western Bolivia to the north of Chile and Argentina. Aymara pigeons mostly occur on the plateaus of the arid and semi-arid Puna . The height distribution usually ranges from 2,800 to 5,000 meters above sea level. In Argentina, however, it is already at an altitude of 300 meters above sea level. been observed. The habitat is open grassland, dried out lakes, dry river banks, but also areas used for agriculture.

The Aymara pigeon is predominantly a resident bird. In some parts of its range, however, it also migrates depending on the seasons. The Aymara pigeon appears to be a resident bird on the Altiplano . It is a ground-dwelling species that is inconspicuous due to its plumage. It mainly eats seeds. The breeding season falls in Bolivia in the period April to August and in Peru in the period May to July. The nest is built on the ground or on ledges. The clutch consists of two white eggs.
