Daniel Giraud Elliot (born March 7, 1835 in New York City , † December 22, 1915 there ) was an American zoologist.

Life

Daniel Elliot was both a co-founder of the American Museum of Natural History in New York and one of the founders of the American Ornithologists' Union . He worked as a curator for zoology at the Field Museum of Natural History in Chicago . Elliot used his fortune to publish a series of costly color prints of birds and other animals. He wrote the lyrics himself. For the pictures, however, he commissioned artists such as Joseph Wolf and Joseph Smit , both of whom had already worked for John Gould . The books included A Monograph of the Phasianidae (Family of the Pheasants) (1870–1872), A Monograph of the Paradiseidae or Birds of Paradise (1873), A Monograph of the Felidae or Family of Cats (1878), and Review of the Primates (1913).

The National Academy of Sciences awards the Daniel Giraud Elliot Medal for meritorious work in the field of zoology or paleontology published within three to five years. In 1875 he was accepted into the Royal Society of Edinburgh . In 1895 Elliot was elected a member of the Leopoldina .

Dedication names

John Cassin honored him in 1863 in the Elliot woodpecker ( Mesopicos elliotii ), Richard Bowdler Sharpe in 1870 in the Elliotliest ( Tanysiptera ellioti ), and Jules Verreaux in 1871 in the Elliothähling ( Trochalopteron elliotii ). Robert Swinhoe named Elliot Pheasant ( Syrmaticus ellioti ) in his honor in 1872 . Émile Oustalet dedicated the green-headed pitta ( Pitta elliotii ) to him in 1874 . Robert Ridgway described the Elliotelfe ( Atthis ellioti ) in his honor in 1878 . In addition, his name can be found in the subspecies of the violet- crowned amazilie ( Amazilia violiceps ellioti ( von Berlepsch , 1889)) and the Theklalerche ( Galerida theklae ellioti Hartert, E , 1897). The subspecies of the turkey ( Meleagris gallopavo ellioti ) described by George Burritt Sennett in 1892 applies now synonymous with Meleagris gallopavo intermedia Sennett , 1879. the by Tommaso Salvadori described 1879 Art porphyrio ellioti is synonymous with the purple gallinule subspecies porphyrio porphyrio samoensis Peale , 1848. the by Modest Nikolaevich Bogdanov described species (1841-1888) Pterocles ellioti is a synonym for today drops Sandgrouse ( Pterocles senegallus ( Linnaeus considered, 1771)). The taxidermist Edwin Ward described the species Epimachus ellioti in 1873 , which today is regarded as a hybrid between the broad-tailed paradise hop ( Epimachus fastuosus ) and the fan paradise ( Astrapia nigra ).

The Luvua colobus monkey subspecies ( Piliocolobus foai ellioti Dollman , 1909) is probably a hybrid of the Oustalet colobus monkey and the Semliki colobus monkey .
