Émile Oustalet (born August 24, 1844 in Montbéliard as Jean-Frédéric Émile Oustalet , † October 23, 1905 in Saint-Cast-le-Guildo , Côtes-du-Nord ) was a French zoologist .

biography

In 1874, Oustalet wrote his doctoral thesis entitled “Recherches sur les insectes fossiles des terrains tertiaires de la France”, in which he described the tertiary insect fauna mainly from Auvergne and the area around Aix-en-Provence . He was employed by the Muséum national d'histoire naturelle , where he succeeded Jules Verreaux (1807–1873) in 1873 . After the death of Alphonse Milne-Edwards (1835-1900) in 1900, he took over his professorship in the mammalogy department .

In 1877 he published together with Armand David (1826-1900) the work "Les Oiseaux de la Chine ... Avec un atlas de 124 planches, dessinées et lithographiées par M. Arnoul et coloriées au pinceau," a standard reference work on the birds of China with 124 hand-painted lithographs by the artist M. Arnoul. In this work 807 bird species have been described for the first time, of which 249 are endemic to China. The birds are shown in their natural environment (e.g. on a branch). In 1900 he described 160 bird hides that Jean Dybowski brought back from his expeditions to the Congo .

Oustalet was president of the 3rd International Ornithological Congress (IOC) in Paris in 1900 .

He was the first to scientifically describe animal species such as the Grevy's zebra , the blood-winged fruit pigeon , the Palila or the Seychelles warbler .

Dedication names

Several animal species are named after Oustalet. José Vicente Barbosa du Bocage honored him in 1878 on behalf of the Angola nectar bird ( Cinnyris oustaleti ). Philip Lutley Sclater dedicated the yellow bored leaf tyrant ( Phylloscartes oustaleti ) to him in 1887 . François Mocquard named the giant chameleon ( Furcifer oustaleti ) in his honor in 1894 . William Earl Dodge Scott called the gray-flank shore rocker ( Cinclodes oustaleti ) in 1900 . Édouard Louis Trouessart dedicated the Oustalet colobus monkey ( Piliocolobus oustaleti ) to him in 1906 .

Tommaso Salvadori described the Mariana duck ( Anas oustaleti ) or ( Anas platyrhynchus oustaleti ) in 1894 , which is now considered an extinct hybrid.

Also in the subspecies of Schwarzscheitelhäherlings ( Trochalopteron affine oustaleti ( Hartert, E , 1909)), the Andensteißhuhns ( Nothoprocta pentlandii oustaleti ) Berlepsch & proud man , 1901 and the Nikobarhuhns ( Megapodius freycinet oustaleti Roselaar , 1994) include his name.

Gustav Hartlaub described 1879 Strix oustaleti a synonym for Graseule ( Tyto longimembris ( Jerdon , 1839)), 1900 temnurus oustaleti synonymous with the conductor tail Elster ( temnurus temnurus ( Temminck , 1825)), Alphonse Trémeau de Rochebrune 1883 Scotopelia oustaleti a synonym for Black-headed fish owl ( Scotopelia peli ( Bonaparte , 1850)) and Hans Edmund Wolters 1952 Carduelis spinoides oustaleti a synonym for the black-headed greenfinch ( Chloris ambigua ( Oustalet , 1896)).
