Jan Sztolcman

Jan Stanisław Sztolcman (born November 19, 1854 , Warsaw , Poland ; † April 29, 1928 , (ibid)) was a Polish researcher and ornithologist. You can sometimes find him in the literature in the spelling or the name Jean Stanislaus Stolzmann . This is why his author's abbreviation is Stolzmann .

Life

Among other things, he held the post of Vice Director of the National Zoological Museum in Warsaw. For the Zoological Museum in Warsaw he toured Peru for several years from 1875. Most of his publications relate to this research trip. During this research trip in 1880 he managed one of the last sightings of the violet-crowned flag sylph for a long time . The bird was considered extinct until the Brazilian naturalist Augusto Ruschi rediscovered it in a valley of Utcubamba in 1962 .

Jan Sztolcman also helped save the European bison . At the International Nature Conservation Congress on June 2, 1923, he made an appeal to save the bison. The congress then decided to found an international society between the countries on whose territories bison were located. The founding meeting of the International Society for the Conservation of the European bison took place on August 25 and 26, 1923 in Berlin. Jan Sztolcman joined this society, to which the Poznan Zoo and the Polish Hunters Association, among others, had joined as an individual.

Dedication names

In 1895, Osbert Salvin named the Grünkopf Andean Hummingbird ( Oreotrochilus proudmanni ) in his honor. Hans Hermann Carl Ludwig von Berlepsch and Władysław Taczanowski described 1884 Ockerbrusttangare ( Habia proud manni ), 1885 Stolzmanntangare ( Urothraupis proud manni ). Taczanowski alone named the Stolzmannammer ( Rhynchospiza proudmanni ) after him in 1877 . Rudolph Amandus Philippi honored him in 1902 in the name of the proud man's swallow ( Tachycineta proudmanni ), Carl Eduard Hellmayr in 1906 in the southern pygmy piper ( Tyranneutes proudmanni ). In 1891, Frank Steindachner described the earth iguana species Liolaemus proudmanni . The type specimen was collected Sztolcman in the Peruvian highlands. In the same year he also described the desert keel-tailed iguana ( Tropidurus proudmanni ). Oldfield Thomas honored him in 1893 in the Wühler -Art Ichthyomys proud manni . Tadeusz Franciszek Antoni Jaczewski called 1928 a Teichläuferart Hydrometra sztolcmani , Antoni Józef Wagner 1928 Schnirkelschneckenart Cattania sztolcmani and Władysław Karol Aleksander Poliński 1922, the door snail Andiniella sztolcmani .

Colaptes proud manni Taczanowski , 1880 has become a synonym for the Südandenspecht subtype ( Colaptes rupicola cinereicapillus Reichenbach , 1854), Elaenia frantzii proud manni Ridgway , 1906 a synonym for Olivkopfelaenie ( Elaenia obscura ( d'Orbigny & Lafresnaye , 1837)), Sitta europaea sztolcmani Domaniewski , 1913, a synonym for the Kleiber ( Sitta europaea Linnaeus , 1758), Catharus dryas sztolcmani Domaniewski 1918, a synonym for the drop chest muse throttle ( Catharus dryas maculatus ( Sclater, PL , 1858)) and Pipraeidea melanonota sztolcmani Dunajewski 1939 , a synonym for the black- backed tangerine subspecies ( Pipraeidea melanonota venezuelensis Sclater, PL , 1857).
