Ibis - subtitled The International Journal of Avian Science - is a journal that has been published continuously by the British Ornithologists' Union ( BOU ) since 1859 . It appears once a quarter and deals with numerous topics such as ornithology , ecology , nature conservation , environmental protection , environmentally friendly behavior , paleontology , taxonomy and new species . Ibis publishes original works, reports and short messages in advance of ornithological research. The focus is on conservation, ecology, ethology and the classification of birds . The first editor was the British lawyer and zoologist Philip Lutley Sclater .
All contributions must be written in English. The work must not have previously been published elsewhere. If the contribution is recognized by the BOU, the author has to assign the exclusive license rights to the British Ornithologists' Union.
