Rudolph Amandus Philippi

Rudolph Amandus Philippi , also Rudolf Amandus Philippi and in Spanish also Rodolfo Amando Philippi (born September 14, 1808 in Berlin - Charlottenburg ; † July 23, 1904 in Santiago de Chile ) was a Chilean paleontologist , botanist , zoologist and malacologist of German descent. Its official botanical author abbreviation is " Phil. "

Live and act

Philippi studied medicine in Berlin , but then left Germany at a young age and embarked on a journey of several years through Italy and Sicily , also to cure himself of a serious illness in the mild climate of the Mediterranean region , which he believed he was suffering from. In 1835 he became a teacher of zoology and botany at the higher trade school in Kassel , which he left in 1850 as director. In Kassel in 1836 he was a co-founder of the Kassel Natural History Association . During this time he spent two years (1838–1840) in Italy.

In 1851 Philippi moved to Chile and in 1853 was entrusted with the management of the Lyceum in Valdivia ; in October of the same year he was then appointed professor of botany and zoology at the University of Santiago de Chile . There he headed both the Botanical Garden at Santiago in Chile and the newly founded Natural History Museum for over 40 years. On numerous exploratory trips through the interior of the country, he created extensive collections of the country's fauna and flora. He is considered to be one of the fathers of modern science in Chile and has played a major role in making it one of the most important natural history museums in all of South America . Philippi was a contemporary of Alexander von Humboldt and was very much appreciated by him.

He is the father of the botanist Federico Philippi (Friedrich Heinrich Eunom Philippi Krumwiede; 1838-1910).

Carl Ochsenius was his assistant in Chile.
