Federico Philippi

Federico Philippi , born as Friedrich Heinrich Eunom Philippi Krumwiede (born December 16, 1838 in Naples , † January 16, 1910 in Santiago de Chile ) was a German - Chilean botanist . Its official botanical author's abbreviation is " F.Phil. "

Life

He was the son of Rudolph Amandus Philippi , collected plants like him in Chile and was his successor as director of the Natural History Museum and head of the Botanical Garden in Santiago de Chile , which his father founded. Philippi initially went to school in Kassel, where his father was a professor, and in 1855 the family followed his father to Chile. He grew up on an uncle's farm and began to build a herbarium early on. From 1860 he accompanied his father on expeditions and supported him in running the museum. From 1871 to 1874 he studied botany and zoology in Halle and, after his return, succeeded his father as professor of botany in Santiago. He also taught zoology at the Department of Agriculture until 1897 and botany at the Medical Faculty until 1906. He worked at the museum until his death, where he helped to save the museum holdings in 1906 after a major earthquake in Chile at risk of death.

He published a lot with his father and described 33 new plant species. In 1911 the National Museum acquired its herbarium.

Honors

Federico Philippi was elected a member of the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina in 1885.
