Robert Swinhoe (born September 1, 1836 in Kolkata , † October 28, 1877 in London ) was a British naturalist, ornithologist and zoologist . Its official botanical author's abbreviation is " Swinhoe ".

Life

Swinhoe was the brother of Charles Swinhoe , a founding member of the Bombay Natural History Society .

Born in Kolkata, India, he studied at the University of London and joined the Consular Corps in China in 1854 . He collected natural history specimens in his spare time in China, and since many of the areas he visited had never been open to Western explorers before, many of the species he collected were new to science. Because of his focus as an ornithologist , many of the species he discovered were birds, but fish, insects and mammals were also collected. In 1862 he returned to England with his collections. Many of the birds he discovered were listed by John Gould in Birds of Asia (1863).

Numerous birds and other animals were named after Swinhoe, such as the Swinhoe wave runner ( Oceanodroma monorhis ), which he himself first described in 1867.
