features
The semliki colobus monkey has a black back and predominantly brick-red colored arms. The chest and belly are gray, the legs blackish-gray with a red tinge. Hands, feet and the tail are black. The top of the head is brick red, a black band runs from ear to ear over the eyes. The throat and sides of the head are reddish, the nape of the neck brown. There is a noticeable tuft of hair at the base of the ear. Information on the body size and weight of the animals is not yet available.
Way of life
Semliki colobus monkeys live in tropical lowland forests, which are characterized by stocks of cynometra (Ironwood), and feed on leaves, sprouts, fruits, flowers, buds and possibly also seeds. Reproduction has not yet been researched.
Systematics
The semliki colobus monkey was described as Colobus badius semlikiensis in 1991 . To the west of its range, in the Ituri Rainforest , there is a larger region in which the population of the red colobus monkey arose from the hybridization of three species. It extends from the mountains west of the Eduardsee in the east, almost to the Lualaba in the west and to the Aruwimi in the north. The three species involved are the Semliki colobus monkey, the Oustalet colobus monkey ( P. oustaleti ) and the Lualaba colobus monkey ( P. langi ). The hybrids in most cases have bright red fore bodies, shoulders and arms. The middle back is orange-brown, the rear back, legs and tail are black. The throat, chest and stomach are gray or yellowish in color. However, there are also mostly maroon or dark red-brown specimens. The hybrids were described as a separate species under the name Piliocolobus ellioti .
Danger
The IUCN does not yet list the Semliki colobus monkey in its Red List of Endangered Species .
