The 230 km long Semliki is the only outflow of the East African Eduardsee and one of the tributaries of the Albertsee .

course

The Semliki flows from Lake Edward on its north-western shore, which is located in the area of the Democratic Republic of the Congo , and further north forms the border between Uganda and the DR Congo. The Semliki flows on this border to the east and parallel to the elongated Central African Sill and within the East African Rift Valley to the north. In this western branch of the East African Rift Valley there is an elongated chain of lakes that are connected by rivers. The Semliki connects the Eduardsee with the Albertsee. The valley is bordered in the west by the Central African threshold, in the east by a chain of volcanic mountains and the Ruwenzori Mountains . Tributaries are the Malaku from the Central African Threshold and the Butago , Bussirubi and some more from the Ruwenzori. The city of Beni on the banks of the DR Congo is also located on the river.

Hydrometry

The flow rate of the river was measured for 38 years (1940–1978) at the Bweramule gauge in m³ / s.

Flora and fauna

Elephants , crocodiles and antelopes live in and around the river . The very small distribution area of the Semliki colobus monkey ( Piliocolobus semlikiensis ) lies on the right bank of the middle Semliki . At its mouth it forms a small delta in which the ambatch , a fast growing, thorny tree, and papyrus grows.
