Beni is a city in the northeast of the Democratic Republic of the Congo in the province of North Kivu with 95,407 inhabitants (as of 2010). It is located about 70 kilometers north of Lake Eduard and a good 100 km southwest of Lake Albert on the western edge of the Virunga National Park and the Ruwenzori Mountains on the Semliki . There is an airport, a market and the Université Chrétienne Bilingue du Congo .

In 2001, Beni was the site of intense fighting in the Second Congo War . Since then, troops from the United Nations Mission have been stationed in the Democratic Republic of the Congo . In summer 2010 there were also refugee movements on the streets of the area.

Melchizedec Sikuli Paluku has been Bishop of the Diocese of Butembo-Beni since 1998 .

Beni was the hardest hit area of ​​the Ebola virus epidemic, which raged from 2018 to 2020 . As of December 10, 2018, 213 cases and 114 deaths were counted in and around the city.

Massacre in Beni

The United Nations Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo confirmed that on the night of August 13-14, 2016, at least 36 people were killed in a massacre on the outskirts of the city of Beni. According to MONUSCO, the fighters were members of the Ugandan guerrilla organization Allied Democratic Forces . North Kivus Provincial Governor Julien Paluku Kahongya called on the population to be vigilant and support the armed forces. The massacre occurred just three days after the visit of the President of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Joseph Kabila .
