Richard Bowdler Sharpe

Richard Bowdler Sharpe (born November 22, 1847 in London , † December 25, 1909 ) was an English zoologist and ornithologist .

Life

Sharpe studied in Brighton , Peterborough and Loughborough . At the age of 16 he worked for Smith & Sons in London. In 1864 he began his first ornithological work, the Monograph of the Kingfishers (1868–1871).

At the suggestion of Osbert Salvin and Philip Lutley Sclater , he became librarian of the Zoological Society of London in 1867 . After the death of George Robert Gray in 1872 he became a senior assistant at the British Museum in London, where he started the bird collections. In 1895 he became assistant museum overseer and held this post until his death, in 1909, when he died of pneumonia .

Sharpe founded the British Ornithologists' Club in 1892 and wrote its bulletin . He also wrote 13.5 of the 27 volumes of the Catalog of the Birds in the British Museum (1874–1898).
