description

The yellow breasted tinamu is about 35 to 41 cm long. The top of the head is matte chestnut brown. The throat is white, the chest and abdomen are cinnamon to reddish brown. The neck and back are olive to red-brown in color. The feet are gray-blue, the beak black on top, whitish on the underside with a black tip.

Occurrence

The yellow breasted tinamu occurs in the Andes of central Colombia , Ecuador and Peru to the far west of Venezuela . It lives in the montane zone up to 1700 to 3350 m altitude.

Way of life

Like most tinamus, the yellow-breasted tinamus eat fruit from low bushes. They also eat small amounts of invertebrates , flower buds, tender leaves, seeds, and roots. The male incubates the eggs. The young hatch after two to three weeks. The nest is at a low level between raised roots.

natural reserve

The yellow breasted tinamu is classified as hardly threatened by the IUCN and has a distribution area of 110,000 km². The population in Peru is limited to small areas and could represent its own subspecies because of its different coloring (reddish skull). This would be more endangered because of its small distribution area.
