Filippo De Filippi (sometimes also: Philippo de Philippi ; born April 20, 1814 in Milan , † February 9, 1867 in Hong Kong ) was an Italian physician, professor of zoology and comparative anatomy at the University of Turin , director of the Museo regional di scienze naturali in Turin and explorer .

Live and act

His father Giuseppe De Filippi (1782-1856) was born in Varallo Pombia and studied medicine in Pavia and later in Paris . The father served in Boulogne-sur-Mer in the Grande Armée as a military doctor in defense of the Russian army. In 1811 he married Giovanna Borsotti, with whom he had several children. He later moved to Milan, where he practiced as a surgeon and doctor.

Filippo De Filippi first attended the private school San Vittore Grande before moving to the high school Sant'Alessandro in Milan. After graduating from high school, he studied medicine at the Collegio Ghislieri .

He should not be confused with the doctor, geographer, mountaineer and explorer Filippo De Filippi (1869-1938), whose uncle he was and who emerged from the marriage of his brother Giuseppe De Filippi with Olimpia Sella.

De Filippi as a scientist

De Filippi devoted himself primarily to comparative anatomy. Instead of following his father to Milan after studying medicine, he preferred to do research in the field of zoology as assistant to Professor Giammaria Zendrini in Pavia . It was here that his first zoological articles were written in 1837. In his youth he dealt with a wide range of research topics ranging from mineralogy , geology and paleontology to zoology , embryology and comparative anatomy.

In 1840 de Filippi moved to the Museo Civico di Storia Naturale di Milano , for which he worked and published until 1847.

When Giuseppe Gené (1800–1847) died, King Carlo Alberto appointed him in 1848 as professor of zoology and anatomy at the University of Turin. De Filippi wrote a necrology in memory of the deceased Gené . He was one of the first to spread the theories of Charles Darwin (1809–1882) in Italy, although he could not agree with all the conclusions of the theory. In 1864, for example, he incurred the displeasure of all right-thinking Italians when he caused a national scandal with the provocative thesis L'uomo e le scimmie (German: Man and the monkey ). His works on zoology, comparative anatomy and histology received a lot of attention in the scientific circles of his time. Many of his Italian publications have been translated into other languages.

His students included u. a. Michele Lessona (1823-1894). De Filippi endeavored to make the natural sciences accessible to a broader public by extending teaching to secondary schools . Finally, in 1867, Lessona wrote an obituary for his mentor.

Research trip to Persia

On April 21, 1862 he left Genoa on a research trip to Persia. In the years 1862 and 1863 he collected with Lessona and the naturalist and politician Giacomo Doria (1840-1913) in Persia . While De Filippi concentrated on geological observations and the vertebrates , the study of molluscs and arthropods fell to Lessona and Doria. He described the trip in his highly acclaimed work Note di un viaggio di Persia nel 1862 (Notes from a trip to Persia in 1962) or articles such as Nuove o poco note specie di animali vertebrati raccolte in un viaggio in Persia nell'estate dell'anno 1862 , Riassunto del catalogo degli animali vertebrati delle provincie caucasiche e della Persia sia occidentale or Riassunto di alcune osservazioni sulla Persia occidentale .

The voyage began in Genoa and took them across Constantinople and the Black Sea to Poti , where they went ashore at the mouth of the Rioni . From here they continued the journey by land. After crossing the border river Aras, they entered Persian territory for the first time via Kutaisi , Tbilisi , Yerevan and Culfa . Via Tabriz and Qazvin they finally reached the destination of their journey with Tehran . After an excursion to Damavand sponsored by Shah Naser ad-Din Shah , diplomatic tasks were initially on the agenda .

Their way back took them over the Elburs Mountains to Rasht on the Caspian Sea. From here they traveled on to Baku and Astrakhan . Their next destination across the Volga was Nizhny Novgorod . Further stations were Moscow , Saint Petersburg and Berlin . From there the way led her back home.

Research trip around the world

On November 8, 1865 De Filippi sailed with Vittorio Francesco Arminjon (1830–1897) and his young assistant Enrico Hillyer Giglioli (1845–1909) with the frigate "Regina" from Naples via Gibraltar and Rio de Janeiro to Montevideo , where the corvette " Magenta ”was at anchor. They finally reached Montevideo on January 17, 1866. Arminjon took command of the "Magenta" and so they set off on February 2, 1866 on an oceanographic expedition and circumnavigation of the world with the "Magenta". They finally reached Batavia on April 7th via the Cape of Good Hope , where they stayed until May 6th. The journey continued towards Singapore , where they docked May 15th. On May 26th they left Singapore to sail to Saigon, which they reached June 3rd. After an eight-day stay, they reached Jedo Bay on August 25th . The next stops were Wusong , Peiho in the Gulf of Petsheli , Beijing , back to Wusong and Shanghai . On December 19, 1866, they went ashore in Hong Kong. When the "Magenta" left Hong Kong on January 26, 1867, De Filippi remained seriously ill in Hong Kong. The young Giglioli took on his scientific responsibility.

During the numerous excursions De Filippi in Macao fell ill with amoebic dysentery or cholera and finally died on February 9, 1867 in Hong Kong.

His body was transferred to Italy in 1879. De Filippi was buried in the Pisa cemetery, the city where his daughter Elisa lived with his son-in-law and student Sebastiano Richiardi (1834-1904). When Richiardi edited together with Giovanni Canestrini (1835-1900) Archivio per la zoologia, l'anatomia e la fisiologia in 1869 , they dedicated the edition to him with the words Alla Memoria di Filippo De Filippi .

The new genus name Defilippia , which Tommaso Salvadori (1835-1923) used for the long-toed lapwing , is now a synonym for the genus of the lapwing Vanellus Brisson , 1760.

Jules Bourcier (1797–1873) dedicated the specific epithet for the orange shadow hummingbird ( Phaethornis philippii ) to De Filippi in 1847 . With him, the common name De Philippi's Hermit found its way into English literature through John Gould (1804-1881) . The red-breasted starling Sturnella defilippii ( Bonaparte , 1850) got its name because Bonaparte recognized that the name Sturnella militaris , which De Filippi had used in his catalog Museum Mediolanense Animalia Vertebrata in 1847 , had already been taken. In order to comply with the International Rules for Zoological Nomenclature , he paid tribute to De Filippi. After his death, Giglioli and Salvadori first described the Juan Fernandez petrel Pterodroma defilippiana in 1869 . In their justification for the name it said:

“We have given to this species the name of the much-lamented Professor F. de Filippi, who halfway on the long voyage, undertaken with such bright hopes, on board the 'Magenta,' fell, as a soldier on the field of battle , a victim to his love of Natural Science, at Hong Kong, on the 9th of February, 1867.) ”

The Milanese museum director Georg Jan (1791–1866) named a new species of snake Heterodon De Filippi in 1863, which is now also known under the common name Defilippis night otter ( Causus defilippii ). Another reptile with his name is a lizard that Lorenzo Camerano (1856–1917) described in 1877, and which is now known as Darevskia defilippii .

Finally, the malacologist Cesare Maria Tapparone-Canefri (1838-1891) dedicated the name of a beetle snail Acanthochitona defilippii (protonym: Amycula de-filippii ), the director of the Museo Civico di Storia Naturale di Milano Emilio Cornalia (1824-1882), a subspecies of Tapeti Sylvilagus brasiliensis defilippi (protonym: Lepus de-filippii ) and the entomologist and malacologist Luigi Bellardi (1818–1889) a horsefly species Tabanus defilippii .
