Polyacanthonotus rissoanus is a deep sea fish from the family of the thorn-back eel (Notacanthidae). It occurs along the coast of the northern Atlantic from North Carolina ( Cape Hatteras ) via the Davis Strait , Baffin Bay , Iceland to Ireland and in the Mediterranean at depths of 500 to 2800 meters. Another population is said to exist in the south-eastern Atlantic off the coast of South Africa.

Polyacanthonotus rissoanus becomes 9.5 to 23 cm long and is one of the smaller species of the genus Polyacanthonotus . The species has an eel-like body that is long but flattened at the side. The tail is slender and pointed. A caudal fin is missing. From the dorsal fin only 26 to 36 single spines remain. Dorsal soft rays are not present. The mouth is small and does not reach the rear nostril. It is surmounted by a short pre-oral snout. Polyacanthonotus rissoanus is whitish, brown or gray, the side line light but not very pronounced.
