The Cenderawasih Bay ( Indonesian Teluk Cenderawasih ), formerly Dutch Geelvinkbaai , is a large gulf in the north of the Indonesian region of Western New Guinea . The first European in the bay was Jacob Weyland from the Netherlands in 1705 .

The bay spans a coastline of over 700 km and is up to 300 km wide. There are numerous Indonesian islands and archipelagos in Cenderawasih Bay. To the north it is closed to the Pacific Ocean by the 140 km long island of Yapen and the Schouten Islands . The Wandammen Peninsula lies on the south bank .

Parts of the bay belong to the Teluk Cenderawasih National Park . A resident population of whale sharks lives in the bay .
