The spatelliest ( Tanysiptera galatea ) is a kingfisher species in New Guinea and the neighboring Moluccas . Several subspecies are distinguished. The Elliotliest and the Biakliest were formerly assigned to the Spatelliest as subspecies .

The IUCN classifies the stock situation of this species as harmless ( least concern ).

features

The Spatelliest reaches a body length of 33 to 43 centimeters including the long tail feathers. The animals weigh between 40 and 78 grams. It has a red beak, blue forehead, white body, and dark blue wings. Its long tail feathers - characteristic of a Kingfisher of Paradise - are white-bluish.

In New Guinea there is also the paradise read, which is similar to the spatelliest. The Paradiesleist, however, has a light ocher breast color.

Occurrence

The habitat of the Spatelliestes are forest areas of the lowlands in New Guinea and the adjacent Moluccas Islands (including Halmahera and Seram ). In New Guinea, it occurs mainly inland. It also colonizes some islands just off the northwest coast of New Guinea.

Its diet consists mainly of insects that it catches on the ground.

The following subspecies are distinguished:

  • Tanysiptera galatea acis , Wallace, 1863. Occurrence on Buru .
  • Tanysiptera galatea boanensis , Mees, 1964. Occurrence on Boano , a 120 km² Indonesian island northwest of Seram .
  • Tanysiptera galatea browningi , Ripley, 1983. Occurrence on Halmahera, the largest island in the Moluccas.
  • Tanysiptera galatea brunhildae , Jany, 1955. Occurrence on a single island in the north of Halmahera.
  • Tanysiptera galatea doris , Wallace, 1862. Occurrence on Morotai , an approximately 1,800 square kilometer island in the north of the Moluccas.
  • Tanysiptera galatea emiliae , Sharpe, 1871. Occurrence on a single island north of Halmahera.
  • Tanysiptera galatea galatea , GR Gray, 1859. Nominate form . Features are the dark turquoise cap, which is sharply set off at the head end compared to the rest of the plumage. The cheeks are blackish. The coat is blue-black. The shoulders are dark turquoise. Half of the middle and greatly elongated pair of control springs are blue. The wing length is 10.7 to 11 centimeters. The distribution area is the west of New Guinea including the island belonging to Raja Ampat off the coast . The occurrence extends to Cenderawasih Bay .
  • Tanysiptera galatea margarethae , Heine, 1860. Bacan Islands
  • Tanysiptera galatea meyeri , Salvadori, 1889. Plains in the north of New Guinea. The proportion of white in the tail plumage is greater than in the nominate form.
  • Tanysiptera galatea minor , Salvadori & Albertis, 1875. Plains in the south of New Guina and the north-western coastal region. The wing length is shorter compared to the nominate shape and is only 10 to 10.8 centimeters. The beak is slimmer.
  • Tanysiptera galatea nais , GR Gray, 1861. Occurrence on Manipa, Ambon, Seram, Manawoka and Gorong.
  • Tanysiptera galatea obiensis , Salvadori, 1877. Found on parts of the Obi Islands
  • Tanysiptera galatea rosseliana , Tristram, 1889 Occurrence on Rossel , the easternmost island of the Louisiade archipelago . Bruce Beehler et al. classify this subspecies as a separate species.
  • Tanysiptera galatea sabrina , GR Gray, 1861. Occurrence on Kayoa, southwest of Halmahera
  • Tanysiptera galatea vulcani , Rothschild & Hartert, 1915. Occurrence on Manam , an inhabited island in the Bismarck Sea and separated from the north coast of the island of New Guinea by the Stephan Strait .
