The Schambach is a left tributary of the Altmühl in the southern Franconian Jura and in the Central Franconian district of Weißenburg-Gunzenhausen (Free State of Bavaria ).

etymology

The ending -bach indicates the small and non-navigable flowing water. Shame comes from the Old High German aha or from the Middle High German ahe , which means flowing water. In 1057/1075 the river was called "Scammaba", in 1214 "Schammach" and in 1341 for the first time "Schambach". There is evidence that a male article was in use for the river in 1721 ("Der Schambach").

course

The Schambach rises inconsistently at about 480  m above sea level. NHN in the lower Laubental just on the municipality mark of Raitenbuch and at the foot of the forest area Otterfleck , approx. 500 m northeast of the Weißenburger Einöde Laubenthal , on which the federal highway 13 crosses it. The valley winds upwards from its source as a dry valley about another 7 km to the north-northeast, its deepening begins roughly between its sewage treatment plant and Burgsalach at an altitude of around 565  m above sea level. NHN .

Right at the forester's house, where the valley road WUG 36 branches off from the B 13, the Schambach valley is approached by another dry valley from the south, others follow in the further course. From here the brook initially runs roughly west towards the village of Suffersheim , after crossing it, the Schambach changes from west-south-west to south-west running direction and passes two Weißenburg mill wastelands, then cuts briefly through Pappenheimer district, past its Flemmühle , and enters for the rest of the course District of the city of Treuchtlingen . It crosses the town of Schambach , which is preceded and followed by a mill location . Then the valley road WUG 36 at the intersection with the B 2 turns into the state road St 2216, which continues roughly west to Treuchtlingen, through the wide valley of the Kästleinsmühlbach , which branches off to the right from the Schambach. The valley itself divides here in front of the Gäblingsberg into this right branch and an equally wide southern branch of the Untertal valley, through which the Schambach itself flows next to the main road leading to the district of Dietfurt . Opposite the western part of the village, the Schambach flows from the left and north to over 405  m above sea level. NN in the middle Altmühl .

Apart from a periodic inflow through the so-called Heuberger Tal , which flows in from the north at the Poschmühle, only short drains from a few springs on the lower slope flow into the Schambach . Even below the few sewage treatment plants in the largely forested catchment area of 98 km² there is no permanent open drain.
