Cosmos bulk shipping
The "Cosmos" Bulkschiffahrt GmbH in Bremen was one of the late 1970s, shortly Germany's largest bulk - shipping companies .
history
The company emerged from a cooperation between Unterweser Reederei (URAG) and Norddeutscher Lloyd (NDL) in the field of trampoline shipping that began in 1970 . For this purpose, both shipping companies first re-established the Roland-Linie and took over two construction contracts for bulk carriers from a Norwegian shipping company at the Copenhagen shipyard Burmeister & Wain . URAG and NDL each took over a new building and had both ships managed by the newly founded Roland-Linie.
After the NDL merged with the Hamburg-America Line in 1970 to form the new shipping company Hapag-Lloyd , the latter pursued a strategy of diversification in the early 1970s. Among other things, a joint subsidiary was founded with URAG in 1973 to operate URAG bulk carriers, the Unterweser Freight Shipping Company . Just two years later, Hapag-Lloyd took over all of the shipping company's ships and renamed the company to “Kosmos” Bulkschiffahrt in 1976 after the German steamship company Kosmos , which was incorporated into HAPAG in 1926 . At this point in time, the shipping company was operating six bulk carriers and five tankers and quickly invested another 400 million D-Marks in the expansion. One of the two European tanker construction contracts placed with AG “Weser” in 1973 was converted into an order for the construction of six multi-purpose freighters of the Seebeck 36L type due to the oil crisis . In September 1976 the "Kosmos" set off with the 393,000-ton tanker Bonn , which was for a short time the largest merchant ship under the German flag. In addition, in 1976 Hapag-Lloyd took over two sister ships of Bonn from the struggling Greek shipowner Minos Colocotronis and gave them to "Kosmos" bulk shipping as Berlin and Bremen to manage. In 1977 the company had a fleet of around 1.7 million tons of deadweight, which by the end of the 1970s had grown to around 20 cargo ships with over 1.9 million tons of deadweight. Due to the difficult market situation in these years, the "Kosmos" consistently made losses. For 1982 alone, Hapag-Lloyd set aside around 96 million D-Marks for the bulk shipping company's balance sheet minus and decided to liquidate the shipping company. All ships were sold, only the tanker Bonn had to be temporarily laid up in Brunei because it could not be sold at a profit (it was ultimately only sold in 1984 for 15 million Deutschmarks). On September 30, 1983, the "Kosmos" ceased operations and on September 11, 1992 the company was finally deleted from the commercial register.
Since the Unterweser Reederei was owned by Frankfurter Metallgesellschaft in the 1960s , all URAG bulk carriers were given names from suburbs of Frankfurt - this naming was also later retained for the six new 36L-type “Kosmos” ships. The tankers carried city names that began with the letter "B".
