Location of Hammermühle in Bavaria

Hammermühle is a district of the large district town Weißenburg in Bavaria in the central Franconian district of Weißenburg-Gunzenhausen . Until the municipal reform in Bavaria , Hammermühle belonged to the previously independent municipality of Suffersheim .

The desert is about six kilometers as the crow flies southeast of the Weißenburg old town at an altitude of about 450 m above sea level. About one kilometer away is Suffersheim, slightly elevated about 300 meters away is the Gunthildiskapelle . State road 2216 runs through Hammermühle and flows into the Schambach , a tributary of the Altmühl .

In 1341 the Pappenheimers sold the mill building to the Schenk von Geyern family . There is evidence of a hammer forge since the beginning of the 16th century . The hammer operation was stopped by 1560 at the latest. The imperial city of White Castle acquired in 1546 the then called a shingle mill wasteland. In 1831 Hammermühle was referred to as "Hammermühlgut mit Mahlrechte". A sawmill was located there between 1920 and 1930 . In 1972 the mill building burned down. Today's residential building is inhabited irregularly.
