Niederhofen is a district of Weißenburg in the central Franconian district of Weißenburg-Gunzenhausen . The place has 360 inhabitants and is located at an altitude of 460 to 470 m above sea level.
Niederhofen is located on the Bösbach , around one kilometer from Oberhochstatt and east of Weißenburg in Bavaria, directly on the northern edge of the Weißenburger Alb . Together with Kehl it was part of the municipality of Oberhochstatt until May 1, 1978 and was reclassified to Weißenburg as part of the municipal reform.
The place was probably founded around the 8th century from Oberhochstatt. In 1250 it was first mentioned in a document as "Niderhowen" and even then it belonged to the Wülzburg monastery . In the center of the village is the listed but dilapidated building of the Wank brewery, which was largely demolished in the summer of 2012.
The nature reserve Quellhorizonte and Magerrasen on the Albtrauf near Niederhofen has been located near Niederhofen since 1986 . With 45 hectares, it is the second largest nature reserve in the Weißenburg-Gunzenhausen district. Globeflowers and several rare species of butterflies can be found in the grasslands of the nature reserve .
The German Limes Cycle Route runs through the village . It follows the Upper German-Raetian Limes over 818 km from Bad Hönningen on the Rhine to Regensburg on the Danube .
