The Sulz is a left tributary of the Altmühl mainly in the district of Neumarkt in the Upper Palatinate in Bavaria , which flows from the left into the lower course of the town of Beilngries in the neighboring district of Eichstätt . The predominantly southern to southeastern course of the approximately 30 km Sulz River was interrupted several times by the construction of the Main-Danube Canal on the lower course, which uses its valley channel .

geography

course

The Sulz rises officially Sulzquelle to about 517  m above sea level. NHN a little north of the settlement boundary of the village of Tyrolsberg in the municipality of Berngau in the forest on the Tyrolsberg. It then has an open run less than 200 meters long, after which it disappears underground at the roadside in Tyrolsberg.

Only almost one and a half kilometers southwest of it is there another open run in the so-called Kindlesgraben , which is about 445  m above sea level. NHN sets in, here the Sulz continues to feed a chain of ponds in a southerly direction and then moves west past the main town of Berngau. It passes two districts of the municipality and then changes to the area of the city of Freystadt , where the village of Sondersfeld is on the left side of the river.

It turns to the southeast in the area of the municipality Mühlhausen , some of which are located on the waterfront. In between, the municipality of Sengenthal borders here , of which only the Braunmühle is located in a certain river proximity. There the Wiefelsbach flows from the left and north, its largest natural tributary, and it now turns consistently to the south in its direction and digs an ever deeper Jura valley.

Then it flows through Mühlhausen itself and changes over to the area of the town of Berching , where the Main-Danube Canal swings into the valley a little below the Pollanten district and now accompanies Sulz to the right. Still in her own bed, she crosses Berching itself and then flows a little below the town limits and the Berching lock of the canal towards it.

After its crossing into the area of the town of Beilngries , which is located in the district of Eichstätt , there is first to the right of the canal, then to the left of it both times under two kilometers long, strongly meandering residual water that drains it off. Shortly before Beilngries itself, where the canal bends to the east, the Sulz is diverted southward from it. It flows for about three kilometers on a south-easterly path through the settlement area of the central city, passes the old town center on the right and then flows out at about 363  m above sea level. NHN from the left into the lower Altmühl .

Canal discharge of the Sulz south of lock 25

The mountain and town of Sulzbürg derive their name from the small, leisurely flowing body of water.

The once meandering Sulz operated many mills, of which the Gösselthalmühle in Gösselthal is reminiscent of the relevant place names listed in the →  Places section .

Near the so-called lock 25 there is an introduction of the Sulz into the historic Ludwig-Danube-Main Canal , the smaller forerunner of today's Main-Danube Canal , which also ran in the Jura valley of the Sulz and of which several sections have been preserved. Such structures were built to compensate for water loss through sluice, seepage and evaporation. If necessary, part of the water was diverted into the canal. In addition to other discharges, the Sulz serves to supply a six-kilometer-long vertex post . At the head of the lock 25 there is a compulsory relief that drains over the Entenbach into the Sulz during high water.
