Wahrberg Castle

The Castle Wahrberg , also called Castle Wahrberg , is an early medieval spur castle at 490  m above sea level. NHN high spur of an elongated mountain tongue and at the same time part of the municipality Aurach in the district of Ansbach in Middle Franconia with 13 inhabitants.

history

In the 9th century , a square jump was built on a mountain tongue in a spur location, where there was an early installation from Celtic times with a watchtower, and mentioned in 888. The spur castle probably served to secure an army road coming from the south to the Main and a salt road coming from the Kocher area near Schwäbisch Hall to the Middle Franconian area.

In the 12th and 13th centuries, the castle was expanded by the Lords of Wahrberg, who were closely related to the Staufers ; it was their ancestral seat from 1119 to 1275 and then until 1805 in the possession of the Hochstift Eichstätt and seat of a maintenance and senior office .

After parts of the castle burned down at the end of the 19th century, it was renovated in the classicist style in 1905 and has been owned by the Bornebusch family ever since.

The Counts of Oettingen are also named as former owners . The coat of arms from 1613 above the entrance points to Prince-Bishop Johann Christoph von Westerstetten and that from 1745 above the gate tower to Prince-Bishop Johann Anton von Freiberg .

The castle is now used as a seminar house. A riding stable is located in the outbuildings.
