The Burgstall Schalkhausen is an abandoned medieval moated castle of the type of a tower hill castle (Motte) immediately south of the school in Schalkhausen (Hetzels-Garten), a current district of Ansbach in Bavaria .
history
The castle, which was mentioned in 1144, was probably built in the 11th century and was probably the ancestral seat of the noble free of Scalchusen. Further owners of the castle are mentioned in 1144 as the Lords of Dornberg ( Dornberg Castle ) and later the Counts of Oettingen . In 1525 the castle was destroyed in the course of the peasant war.
In more recent times, a strong, square tower was known from the castle. In 1737, the 19- foot- deep foundation walls of the tower were excavated and used as building material. In the Schalkhausen parish description it is stated “that in 1944 the then 85-year-old Mr. Blümlein, to whose property the castle hill and moat belonged, said that as a young lad he had broken 40 fathom stones of this tower and helped to remove them the Ansbach barracks were used ”. Archaeological finds indicate that the castle must have burned down twice. Today you can still see the circular system with the moat fed by the Onoldsbach .
