The castle Herzogenaurach , including Castle Aurach called, is a Outbound medieval moated castle instead of the current Town Hall in Herzogenaurach (In Mooshof 4) in the district of Ansbach in Bavaria .
history
The castle was built in the 10th century by the Lords of Aurach. A new building was built in the 13th century. In October 1375 the castle is named in a contract between the Lords of Mörnsheim and the Counts of Hohenlohe as "Vestes Haus" in Aurach under Wahrberg . On September 1, 1510, the Lords of Mörnsheim sold the castle to Prince-Bishop Gabriel von Eyb and his monastery. In 1511, under Prince-Bishop Gabriel von Eyb, the moated castle was demolished and a new building was erected, which was the seat of the Aurach Bailiwick from 1511 to 1805 . In 1778, the double-arched ashlar bridge to the building on oak piles was built as an access over the 10th century moat. There is a coat of arms of the Prince-Bishop above the entrance and one from 1733 on the bridge staircase.
Originally it could also have been a moated castle of the type of a tower hill castle (moth).
