The complex, built in the form of a moated castle at the beginning of the 13th century , was protected by two wide moats , a mighty earth wall and a curtain wall . Access was via the main gate facing north-west . Parts of this circular wall, the Gothic gate passage and the core of the "old fortress" have been preserved to this day. In 1688 the complex was rebuilt or parts of it were rebuilt in the late Baroque style.

history

The builders are generally considered to be the lords of Truhendingen , who were first mentioned as counts in 1264 around the presumed construction time of the moated castle at the beginning of the 13th century. The Lords of Truhendingen had their headquarters in neighboring Altentrüdingen . The castle complex was spared from the town fire in 1388. During the Peasants' War in 1525, the Oettingian administrator Kaspar Schenk von Schenkenstein sat at Wassertrüdingen Castle, whose ancestral castle Schenkenstein Castle had been burned down by the rebels. During the Thirty Years War , the town was burned down by the Bavarian troops on the orders of General Jean de Werth under the command of Colonel Du Partel. The castle was spared from this conflagration. In 1688 the palace was partially rebuilt and redesigned in Baroque style . A spacious staircase and elaborate stucco work were incorporated.

Over the centuries, the castle housed the caste office, upper office, the margravial district directorate, state and municipal authorities, the regional court, the district court, notary's office, tax office and the prison. Today the castle houses the Christa Maria Stift , which operates a care facility for mentally and physically disabled people.
