The place was probably founded in the 10th century. According to the place name, it was a clearing settlement .

In the geographical statistical-topographical lexicon of Franconia (1801) the place is described as follows:

Roth, Eichstättischer Weiler, a quarter of an hour southeast of Herrieden in the Altmühlgrunde, not far from this river between Herrieden and Leitenbuch. The upper and city bailiff's office in Wahrberg-Herrieden has two subjects, the high and the lower authorities, then the outrage, the collegiate monastery in Herrieden but the community rule and the shepherd's staff there. There are also six subjects belonging to the princely tax office of these colleges. A farm there has the job of bringing Schmalz down to Hof on Eichstätt. "

In 1806 Roth came to the Kingdom of Bavaria . As part of the community edict , Roth was assigned to the Rauenzell tax district formed in 1808 . It also belonged to the rural community Rauenzell , which was founded a little later . With the second community edict (1818) Roth was re-ceded to the newly formed rural community Hohenberg . In 1840 at the latest, Roth separated from Hohenberg's people book and formed its own rural community. In administration and jurisdiction, it was subordinate to the Herrieden district court and in the financial administration to the Herrieden rent office (from 1920: Herrieden tax office , from 1950: Ansbach tax office ). From 1862 Roth was administered by the Feuchtwangen District Office ( renamed Feuchtwangen District in 1938 ). The jurisdiction remained until 1879 the District Court Herrieden, since 1880 district court Herrieden , 1950 District Court Ansbach . The municipality had an area of 3,089 km².

On July 1, 1971, Roth was incorporated into Herrieden as part of the regional reform .
