The Petrusquelle , also called Petersbrunnen , is a karst spring near Riedenburg in Lower Bavaria .

description

Downflowing Deisinger Bach

The Petrusquelle is located in the Riedenburg district Deising below the Petruskirche . It is a pent-up spring pot with slightly bluish shimmering water. The average bulk of Petrusquelle is 550 l / s. After the snow melts or after heavy rain , it can pour up to 6,000 l / s. In 1909, around 50,000 liters of cloudy brown water escaped her every second, which destroyed parts of the town. The catchment area of the Petrusquelle covers about 55 km². The source was taken by the Altmühlmünster monastery . At that time she operated a mill and a sawmill . In 1945 the mill burned down completely and was rebuilt in the following years. Today the Petrusquelle is used to generate electricity and to operate the sawmill. The flowing Deisinger Bach flows into the Altmühl after about 430 meters .

Geotope

The source is identified by the Bavarian State Office for the Environment as geotope 273Q004. See also the list of geotopes in the Kelheim district .

Petrus Spring Cave

Some starvation wells can emerge in the area around the spring . These are hydrologically related to the Petrusquelle, as they also arise from the Petrus Cave system. In 2003 the active water cave could be entered through an artificial access. A corridor length of about 1000 meters was measured. The entrance was closed again and the cave is no longer accessible today. The cave is registered as I 175 in the Franconian Alb cave register (HFA).
