The former Johanniter Commandery Church

The Altmühlmünster monastery is a former monastery in the town of the same name near Riedenburg in the Kelheim district , of which only the church, today's parish church of St. Johannes Baptist , still exists.

history

A Benedictine monastery is said to have existed in Altmühlmünster around 800 , but this cannot be documented. Presumably from this monastery settlement a parish village developed, which is first mentioned in writing in 1154 (document of Pope Hadrian IV ). The following year, the Viscount of Riedenburg, Heinrich and Otto from the House of donated Babonen , a monastery, "monasterium ad almonam" which she in 1158 the Templars were broadcasting. This Templar branch was occupied by a commander and 5 brothers. The commandery included 316 Tagwerk Land, the Laubhof and Blauhof farms, 24 Tagwerk Wiesengrund, the water rights in the village and today's Gasthaus Gerstner, the hunting rights, as well as 3 vineyards in Kelheim. As part of the Europe-wide elimination of the Knights Templar after the resolutions of the Council of Vienne , the Altmühlmünster monastery was transferred to the Order of St. John by Emperor Ludwig the Bavarian in 1312 . Altmühlmünster remained one of the most important Johanniter commanderies in the region until modern times. It was not until 1808 that the monastery was completely dissolved in the course of secularization and fell into disrepair.

legend

"... Anciently, Altmühlmünster was a religious house of the Templars. The people still say that once armed men came in the middle of the night and carried away the Templars who lived there in shackles. They shouldn't have been very diligent in their sobriety, hence the proverb received: 'You drink like a Templar!' ... "

Altmühlmünster is located in the Kelheim district , in an idyllic side valley of the Altmühl , approx. 12 km from Riedenburg . The village, a street village of approx. 1.5 km in length, is surrounded on three sides by the forest.

Today's parish church of St. Johannes is the only visible remnant of the former Templar / Johanniter Commandery. It contains the core of the Romanesque monastery church, which was probably provided with a rectangular choir and was expanded in the 15th century under the Johannites by a polygonal choir and side chapels.

Every performance is sold out; the passion plays are known nationwide.
