history

Under National Socialism, an ammunition plant was built in spring 1936 , which was inaugurated on September 26, 1936. Up until April 17, 1945, when the US Army took it without a fight , 400 to 3,000 workers - including those forced to do so and foreign workers - produced grenades and projectiles. The institution was used by the Americans until 1954, from 1954 to 1959 displaced persons were housed and the area was used by the customs dog school, and from 1959 by the German armed forces , which called the area the Frankenkaserne in 1960. Most recently the Defense District Command 63 (VBK 63) was stationed there, which was responsible for the administrative districts of Middle Franconia and Swabia . On July 1, 2006, the barracks were closed and the property was offered for sale. On July 30, 2008, it was handed over to the US armed forces, which have continued to use it since then, like the on-site shooting range and the rest of the grounds of the former Muna.
