Hochholz is a district of Solnhofen in the Middle Franconian district of Weißenburg-Gunzenhausen . The village has about 40 inhabitants and is located at an altitude of about 500 meters above sea level. The place is laid out as a street village.

Hochholz is located in the Franconian Alb , surrounded by meadows and fields in West Central Franconia , northeast of Solnhofen in the Altmühltal Nature Park . Not far is the Hochholz forest corridor of the same name . The border to the Upper Bavarian district of Eichstätt runs in an arc around the east side of the place. The neighboring towns are (clockwise, starting with the north) Bieswang , Ochsenhart , Schönfeld , Eßlingen and Solnhofen. The town's streets connect Hochholz with the surrounding towns.

The village probably got its name from its location in a high, wooded area. In 1875 there were 73 people living in 28 buildings with 86 cattle. In 1808 the place became part of the Solnhofen tax district with the municipal edict, and in 1818 the rural community of Eßlingen was separated from it. Up until the regional reform in Bavaria on July 1, 1971, Hochholz was a district of Eßlingen in the Gunzenhausen district , which was renamed into today's Weißenburg-Gunzenhausen district after it was merged with the Weißenburg district in Bavaria . The only building registered as a monument in the Bavarian Monument List is an approximately one meter high boundary stone from the 18th century. Due to its small size, there are no authorities, medical practices, post offices, cultural institutions or shops in the village. The nearest doctors and shops are in Solnhofen, Pappenheim and Schernfeld . Ecclesiastically, the place belongs to the Protestant parish of St. Veit in Solnhofen in the Evangelical Lutheran Deanery Pappenheim and to the Catholic parish of St. Giles in Schönfeld in the diocese of Eichstätt . There is the Eßlingen / Hochholz volunteer fire brigade based in Eßlingen.
