history

In the town hall were Germanic vessels found that are in the collections of the Historical Society Eichstaett.

Schönfeld ("Schönnevelt") was probably created as a forest hoof village from Dollnstein in the 12th century . The first documentary mention comes from 1309, when in a comparison with Count Ludvick von Oetingen ( Haus Oettingen ) the village was assigned to Bishop Philipp. In 1381 the place is owned by the Monheim Monastery . In the early 15th century, the Counts of Heideck are the village lords. In 1440 the place fell back to the bishopric under Bishop Albrecht. A village tree planted around 1530 by the parish church was felled in 1948. In 1552 the village suffered severe damage from the Hessians under Elector Moritz von Sachsen . In 1795 a great cattle epidemic raged in the village; An annual pilgrimage to St. Wendelin in Ammerfeld was vowed , which is still carried out on the Sunday after the church fair.

With the secularization of 1802, the village became Bavarian for a short time until it belonged to the Grand Duke Archduke Ferdinand of Tuscany from 1803 to 1805 . After that Schönfeld was a municipality of the Altmühlkreis , from 1833 of the Regenkreis and from 1837 of the Central Franconia district . In 1862 the village became part of the district office and later the district of Eichstätt. On January 1, 1971, the place lost its communal independence and joined Schernfeld, with which Schönfeld came to the administrative district of Upper Bavaria on July 1, 1972 in the course of the Bavarian regional reform . From 1970 to 1980 a land consolidation was carried out. In 1983 there were 12 full-time agricultural and eleven part-time farms in the village with 316 inhabitants. Schönfeld received several prizes in the competition “Our village should be more beautiful” at the state and federal level.

Catholic parish church of St. Giles

St. Aegidius - Schönfeld

The parish church was, as the patronage suggests, originally a hunting band of the prince-bishops of Eichstätt. Schönfeld initially belonged to the Dollnstein parish as a branch, but was founded as a separate parish in 1491 by the Dollnstein pastor Georg Dörnlein. Dörnlein died in 1492 and is buried in the choir of the Schönfeld church (tombstone there). In 1602 it is reported that there is a "chapel without a tower" in Schönfeld. From today's church on the village green, the choir and the hexagonal roof turret with the depressed dome belong to the late 17th century. In 1726 the church received a new choir altar, created by Jakob Meisler von Dollnstein, whereby the old altar sheet was reused. In 1738, instead of the old side altars with the coat of arms of the Reichsmarschalls von Pappenheim, new ones made by Meisler were added to the church, which no longer exist today. At the beginning of the 19th century, vestments were obtained from the secularized Notre Dame monastery in Eichstätt. In 1860 the nave was extended; the baroque interior has now been redesigned in a new Romanesque style. The ceiling painting from 1893 depicts the Ascension of Christ. The neo-Romanesque furnishings were removed during the renovation in 1967/68. Above the chancel there is a rosary Madonna with a late Gothic figure of Mary from 1470/80 and a baroque wreath. Various sculptures of saints decorate the church interior. - In 1778, the prince-bishop's building director Maurizio Pedetti built a new stately vicarage, which has recently been renovated. - The parish is also supplied by the pastor of Schernfeld. In 1998 the 500th anniversary of the Schönfeld parish was celebrated.
