Bavaria was divided into districts in 1808

history

In 1808 the Kingdom of Bavaria was administratively divided into 15 districts, which - following the French model - were named after rivers: Mainkreis ( Bamberg ), Pegnitzkreis ( Nuremberg ), Rezatkreis ( Ansbach ), Nabkreis ( Amberg ), Regenkreis ( Regensburg and Straubing) ), Altmühlkreis (Eichstätt), Oberdonaukreis ( Ulm ), Lechkreis ( Augsburg ), Isarkreis ( Munich ), Salzachkreis ( Burghausen ), Unterdonaukreis ( Passau ), Illerkreis ( Kempten with Vorarlberg ), Innkreis ( Innsbruck ), Eisackkreis ( Brixen and Bozen ) and Etschkreis ( Trient ). This was determined by a very high ordinance for the territorial division of the kingdom of June 21, 1808.

The Altmühlkreis encompassed a very fragmented territory. Old Bavarian and Upper Palatinate regional courts - Neumarkt, Riedenburg, Ingolstadt, Rain and the Donaumoosgericht - as well as Palatinate-Neuburgian areas - the regional courts Neuburg, Monheim and Hilpoltstein, the city of Donauwörth - met together with the regional courts Eichstätt, Beilngries, Kipfenberg and Raitenbuch of the former bishopric and parts of the Principality of Ansbach, which was exchanged for the Duchy of Berg in 1806 - the previously Prussian justice offices of Ellingen, Heidenheim, Roth, Spalt with Pleinfeld and Abenberg, Weissenburg. These initially 21 regional courts and offices as well as the county of Pappenheim were combined to form the Altmühlkreis and in autumn 1808 were combined to form 15 regional courts. From 1809 the cities of Eichstädt, Ingolstadt and Neuburg were separated from the regional courts of the same name, subordinated directly to the general district commissioner and thus directly within the district . But in 1810 the Altmühlkreis was dissolved again. Its territory was mostly the upper Danube circle assigned, the district court Riedenburg but came to regenkreis .

General commissioner of the Altmühlkreis was Maximilian Graf von Thurn und Taxis . The first secretary of the district government was Johann Simon Edler von Walck .
