history

A prehistoric section fortification has been proven on the Schneckenberg above Wasserzells .

The current district of Eichstätt used to consist of upper and lower water cells. Unterwasserzell, founded in the 10th or 11th century, was originally called "Richoluescelle". In 1196 an Otto de Celle was named as Canon of Eichstätt. The area upstream from Eichstätt, in which Wasserzell is located, was an imperial estate until the Augustinian monastery Rebdorf was founded in 1156. The village was later shared by the Bishop of Eichstätt, Rebdorf Monastery and Eichstätter Monastery Sankt Walburg . In 1216 a settlement was made between the cathedral parish and the Rebdorf monastery about parish rights. A pilgrimage is mentioned in 1446 .

In the course of the witch persecution in the Hochstift Eichstätt , at least two women from Wasserzell were accused as alleged witches and sentenced to death in 1617 and 1618 respectively.

During the Thirty Years War the place was sacked in 1633.

The railway connection from Wasserzell has existed since 1885. The original narrow-gauge railway was converted to standard gauge in 1934 . Southwest of Wasserzell, the route leads towards Eichstätt station through the Schneckenberg tunnel (189 meters long).

On July 1, 1972, Wasserzell was incorporated into Eichstätt as part of the regional reform in Bavaria .

In 2009 the Altmühl near Wasserzell, which was regulated in the 1920s, was renatured. A former river meander in the direction of Obereichstätt in the Sperberslohe corridor was reactivated by connecting two oxbow lakes and backfilling the Altmühl regulation route.
