Juan Argüello del Castillo y Guzmán (* 1778 in Granada (Nicaragua) , † 1830 in Guatemala ) was from April 22, 1826 to September 14, 1827 and from August 5, 1828 to April 1829, Supremo Director of the Province of Nicaragua within the Central American Confederation .

Life

Juan Argüello del Castillo y Guzmán was a member of the Partido Federalista . Under his cousin, Supremo Director , Manuel Antonio de la Cerda, Juan Argüello was Deputy Supremo Director . He indicted Manuel Antonio de la Cerda before the Constituent Assembly and assumed the office of Supremo Director in November 1825 after the Constituent Assembly dismissed Manuel Antonio de la Cerda. The first constitution of the province of Nicaragua was promulgated on April 22, 1826. The term of office of the Supremo Director was four years. In 1826, Juan Argüello del Castillo y Guzmán called new parliamentary elections.

His opponents in the constituent assembly met on September 17, 1826 in Granada (Nicaragua) and there elected Pedro Benito Pineda as Supremo Director . Argüello sent troops to Granada and in February 1827 they managed to capture Pedro Benito Pineda and bring him to Leon, where Juan Argüello del Castillo y Guzmán ordered him to be murdered.

Cleto Ordóñez, the inspector general of the Army of the Central American Confederation, deposed Juan Argüello del Castillo y Guzmán with a palace revolt and called new elections. After Cleto Ordóñez had failed with his government, Juan Argüello del Castillo y Guzmán returned from his exile in El Salvador on August 5, 1828 and was again Supremo Director .

In April 1829 the government of the Central American Confederation under José Francisco Morazán Quezada had him deported to Guatemala.
