The Altmühlalb is a natural area (082.2) of the southern Franconian Alb in the south-west German step country .

geography

The almost 100 kilometer long region north of the Danube - between Nördlinger Ries and Kelheim , with the Altmühl meandering in numerous arches in the middle - is one of the largest nature parks in Germany. The main places in the western part are Gunzenhausen , Weißenburg , Treuchtlingen , Pappenheim and the university and episcopal city of Eichstätt , in the east there are Beilngries , Dietfurt an der Altmühl , Riedenburg , Painten and Kelheim. It crosses the A9 Munich – Berlin autobahn in the middle between Ingolstadt and Greding .

Classification

tourism

Tourism plays a major role in the lower Altmühltal. The cities of Eichstätt , the three- castle town of Riedenburg , Prunn Castle , the Liberation Hall above Kelheim and the Weltenburger Enge , also known as the Danube Gorge near Weltenburg , with Bavaria's oldest monastery, Weltenburg, are popular .

geology

Light limestones ("White Jura"), the top 100 meters of the southern German Jura , shape the landscape everywhere in rock formations and quarries. The bank limestone is used economically as Jura marble and the plate limestone as Solnhofen slabs .

paleontology

The extraordinarily good tradition of plants and animals in the Solnhofen formation made Langenaltheim , Solnhofen , Eichstätt , Jachenhausen , Painten and Kelheim world famous. Among the fossils that have been studied and described for centuries, the most important are the primeval bird Archeopteryx , the pterosaurs Pterodactylus and Rhamphorhynchus, as well as the Juravenator and Compsognathus , one of the smallest dinosaurs . The most beautiful fossils can be viewed in the Jura Museum on the Eichstätter Willibaldsburg and in the Mayor Müller Museum in Solnhofen.

Meteorite impacts

On both sides and above the Altmühltal , wide-span plateaus spread out around 500 m above sea level. They are covered with clay and the never-missing alemonites . The Alemonitized plate limestone from Baiersdorf provided the raw material for the tools of the Neanderthals . The leveling surface controlled the creation of the valleys of the Urdonau and later the Altmühldonau until it was finally taken by the Altmühl. The varied paths of the Danube and Altmühl in the Altmühlalb are a special chapter in the history of the river in southern Germany.
