  • Juravenator starki

Juravenator ("Jäger des Juragebirge ") was a genus theropod dinosaur from the group of Coelurosaurier (Coelurosauria), which lived during the Upper Jurassic in Germany. So far only the Juravenator starki type is known, which wasscientifically described in2006 on the basis of the only known fossil specimen, the holotype .

The Paleontological Society has chosen the holotype as “ Fossil of the Year 2009”.

Size comparison

The fossil was the best-preserved theropod find ever made in Europe. The almost completely preserved young animal, about 75 to 80 centimeters in size, lived in the Upper Jurassic ( Kimmeridgium ) in Bavaria near Eichstätt , where the small theropod Compsognathus and the "primeval bird" Archeopteryx were also found. The little dinosaur may have drowned in the sea, which can be deduced from foreign objects inside the fossil's body.

The fossil is in exceptionally good condition, soft tissues and imprints of the skin with small pustules have been preserved, but no signs of feathers. If further studies confirm this finding, then not all coelurosaurs were feathered dinosaurs .

Juravenator was founded in 1998 by the amateur paleontologist Klaus-Dieter White and his brother in a pit near Schamhaupten found and named before the scientific description "Borsti" in assuming the dinosaurs have possibly proto feathers possessed.

Systematics

In the systematic assignment of the first description , Juravenator is classified as a Compsognathidae , a theropod group in which Sinosauropteryx from China and Compsognathus , among others , are placed. Butler et al. (2007) come to the conclusion that Juravenator should be understood more as a basic (primeval) Maniraptora . It is under discussion whether the Compsognathidae can be classified within the Maniraptora or represent a more primitive group outside of this taxon .
