The Bürgermeister-Müller-Museum is a paleontological and geological museum in Solnhofen , a municipality in the Weißenburg-Gunzenhausen district in Central Franconia . The museum achieved a certain international reputation by owning two originals of the ancient bird Archeopteryx found in the region . The subject of lithography is also part of the exhibition . The museum is located in the Solnhofen town hall and has the address Bahnhofstraße 8.

history

Friedrich Müller, fossil collector with an international reputation and temporary mayor of Solnhofen, exhibited his private fossil collection as early as 1954, consisting of finds from Solnhofen limestone from the surrounding area. Unlike other fossil collectors in the region, he did not sell his collection, but expanded it. In 1968 the municipality of Solnhofen founded the Mayor Müller Museum named after Friedrich Müller with Müller's fossil collection as the basis. In 1970 the museum opened its doors for the first time, and in 1986 the museum was fundamentally expanded.

collection

The museum shows mostly fossils of plants and animals from the Jurassic period , especially from the local quarries in Langenaltheim , Eichstätt and Solnhofen as well as from Brunn , Hienheim and Painten . Fish species such as sharks and beaked fish are represented in particularly large numbers . There are also many species of reptiles , including the Sphenodontier Homoeosaurus , plesiosaurs and several pterosaurs , and several cancers , echinoderms and cephalopods such as ammonites and Belemnites . The collection also includes various marine and land plants as well as jellyfish and medusa and their remains in stone form. The most valuable pieces in the collection are the originals of several fossils of the ancient bird Archeopteryx . Also on display are prints of the Archeopteryx specimens found in Solnhofen , which are now kept in the Berlin Museum of Natural History and the Natural History Museum in London . The museum keeps the Painten predatory dinosaur ( Sciurumimus ), also known as the Painten squirrel because of its tail, on permanent loan . The collection also includes several lithographic plates and drawings as well as a lithographic press. You can also see the world's largest lithograph. Tools from a chopping master are also on display .
