Protection zone in the Altmühltal Nature Park (ID: LSG-00565.01) is a landscape protection area in Bavaria . It extends over an area of around 1633 km² (163,296.06 hectares ) in the districts of Eichstätt , Neuburg-Schrobenhausen and the city of Ingolstadt in Upper Bavaria , the districts of Weißenburg-Gunzenhausen and Roth in Middle Franconia , the districts of Neumarkt in the Upper Palatinate and Regensburg in the Upper Palatinate , the Kelheim district in Lower Bavaria and the Donau-Ries district in Swabia .
The nature reserve is located in the center of Bavaria in the Altmühltal nature park . It is the second largest in the Free State and one of the largest in Germany. The protected area includes the Altmühltal and parts of the Franconian Alb . It includes numerous forest areas such as the Raitenbucher Forest or the Köschinger Forest .
