Barry Castle is a ruined castle in Wales . The facility, classified as a Grade II * cultural monument and protected as a Scheduled Monument , is located in the town of Barry in the Vale of Glamorgan in South Wales .

history

At the beginning of the Norman conquest of Wales towards the end of the 11th century, the Norman knight Odo received property in Pembrokeshire and Glamorgan . To secure his possessions in Glamorgan, he built a first castle with earth and wood fortifications instead of a ruin from Roman times. His grandson, the well-known church politician and writer Gerald de Barri , reports that his family named themselves after the castle and settlement de Barri . The family's main seat was the nearby Manobier Castle , later the family built Barryscourt Castle in Ireland . Towards the end of the 13th century, Lucas de Barry began to replace the earth and wood fortifications with a fortified stone mansion. The castle was badly damaged during the revolt of the Welsh Llywelyn Bren in 1316. John de Barry rebuilt the castle and expanded it with the construction of a living hall and a gatehouse.

As early as the 16th century, Barry Castle was abandoned and fell into disrepair. Presumably during the English Civil War , the gatehouse was briefly repaired, but after the Civil War the facility continued to deteriorate. Today the ruins of Cadw and the town council are maintained by Barry and are freely accessible.

The small rectangular castle was enclosed by a wall. Inside the wall were two stone buildings, of which no visible remains have survived today. The ruins of the small gatehouse and an adjacent residential building on the south side of the small complex have been preserved. The two-story gatehouse had an arched gateway and was protected by a drawbridge and portcullis. The space above the gateway was probably used as a chapel. The outer wall of the building to the left of the gatehouse has been preserved. The ground floor has archery slits, on the upper floor was the living room with a fireplace, which originally had a slate roof. A narrow staircase set into the wall led to a battlement on the south wall, which led to the gatehouse.

The ruins of the castle are located in the center of Barry on a small hill north of Romilly Park .
